Heavy nymphs/bugs, eight good fish, lost quite a few flies by pushing my luck around the trees that had fallen in the river. Could do with some sort of path cutting in the wooded areas and some of the trees taken out of the river, but will be visiting again for sure when trout are in season.

Overcast day with temperatures at 4c. All fish taken on pink shrimps and hair's ear.
The flood water over the last two winters are starting to undercut the banks on the bends and require stabilising.
Many thanks to Allison at the Wye and Usk.

Water was very high and fast, snow on the ground and a spoiling wind. Worked hard to locate fish to no avail.

20 x grayling 6-18 inches, Pink Shrimp. After rain before and around dawn, the Lugg was rather higher at 1ft 4.5 inches than I would have liked ideally. The faster pools at the top end were quite turbulent, which makes it difficult to control the nymphs. However, I did feel like a change from the Wye and the Irfon and as I never got to fish Eyton at all last winter due to the prolonged floods, I was keen to give it a try now. Once on the river, the day became much brighter, if colder, with a big wind blowing. 19 of the grayling caught were small, mostly shoats of 10 and 11 inches. However, the last one of the day, taken at sunset after a protracted struggle while it was boring into the depths, finally came to the surface to reveal itself as a bull of a cock fish, 18 inches, thickset and dark pewter in colour. This made a perfect end to a lovely winter day's sport. Every one of the fish took a Pink Shrimp, although more life-like nymphs were offered. Salmon present on the beat and, I'm sorry to report, so were cormorants.

A total blank. The Lugg at Mortimer's Cross was running very high on Saturday after heavy rains on Friday night. Although the flow was better on Sunday on the Eyton beat. There was a lot of debris in the water - logs, branches etc. We didn't have a single take all weekend.

First time out on this beat. With a coloured & rising river, I fought for the 3 I had, finding it hard to wade or get through the wooded areas.

Arrived 7 am grey misty morning which progressed into light rain all day started at the top of the run and had an 8" brownie with my first cast on a tungsten bug followed by 4 grayling of the same size. Moved down river and had a solid take which I thought was a large trout. It was a double hook up with a large grayling of 17" and another 8" grayling my first double hook up and my largest grayling approx 2lb - happy days. Also had my smallest at a tiny 2". Could have switched to drys as there were plenty of rises but kept busy with the bugs can't wait to return.

Nice days fishing, river slightly up but running fairly clear. 9 graying to 12 inches and 2 trout taken. All in top condition. All fish taken on nymphs under indicator. Near all woodland parts of the beat were not possible to fish due to high vegetation!
