No fish, very bright and warm day, despite regular but not heavy hatch of LDOs saw only 2 rises all day. Dredging weighted nymphs saw shoddy angling bumping two fish off. Beautiful stretch of water- hope to visit again despite lack of success.

I came here on this day rather than somewhere else as I'd heard of some salmon being caught further upstream. There should be a few here then which I was hoping to at least see. The water was at a good height and colour, so I was optimistic...

I found out why you have to telephone book during the week; there are season rods, who don't book through the WUF, so even though it doesn't appear booked, there may be fishermen there. And so I met a gentleman called Lynn. We got on very well, and he did see a salmon. As usual I was looking the other way at that moment, and it didn't show again. We both commented on how little activity there was with trout. There were good hatches of fly, but no takers. He hooked one, but I hooked a large tree....

One thing to look at... there was a bad chemical smell emanating from the bridge area. I don't know what it was, but it was quite noxious. It may be something to do with the caravan park; septic tank chemicals perhaps, but whatever it was, it was quite choking and drifted upstream with the wind...

Despite little rain the river continued to maintain its height at about 0.9 metres on the gauge, but was clear. Why can't we get this water in May when there are some tourists about!
There was a brief hatch of LDO'S with the first grannom of the season although march browns seemed absent that day.
Using a mixture of weighted nymphs, spiders and dry jinglers I got 5 nice fish up to about 1.5lbs.
There were few fish moving and the only rises I saw were on the more placid stretches of water.

Beautiful beat and water. Good flow and initially quite coloured- cleared as day went on. Easier to see channels, depth, flow later which was helpful as I was new to this beat. Good hatch of LDO around midday lasting about an hour, but downstream breeze blew them off rapidly. Even those that lingered didn't interest the fish- no rises seen all day. Searched with nymphs but unable to make contact with any fish. I'll return another day.
NB I think the pub marking the right turn on the directions has changed to "Steelhorse Cafe"

River looking good but should have been here yesterday ! (When trout were rising freely on a warm day) Much cooler and only saw 5 olives hatch all day and just one riser. Spent two hours swishing the cobwebs off the 15ft-er, great to be back. Switched to trout Rod for a few hours and had a fit 1 1/4 lber on a Waterhen Bloa.

I fished for salmon 3-5pm. One could not ask for better conditions, river level, clarity, temp. , weather all "spot on ". Every cast, every swing, every "on the dangle", sizzled with expectation. It was such a tonic to be out and by the river. I know, next time, I fish the Usk as it was yesterday, I'll be releasing at least half a dozen fish. Trout fishing had been good , with hatches and catches around midday.

Despite the river being high, .9 on the gauge, there was a good hatch of both LDO's and March Browns. I got 8 fish on various spider patters at lunchtime, with the best fish at 1lb 8oz. All were returned and were in excellent condition.
