Arrived at 6.45am (early start from Wiltshire) River 0.78m nice tint falling slowly. Fished for 7hrs without sign of salmon spinning and fly. Then had (another) impromptu lesson from Tom Hannon, during which a fish showed toward the end of Rock pool. Single spey markedly improved, an hour later a red cock fish of 8lb accepted my Golden Killer (Russian pattern) off the tip of Rock. Kindly netted by Tom and safely returned. My first fly caught Usk salmon. A lovely day (suntan included!).

1 Salmon

Started at 9.00am then the torrential rain started river rose rapidly so left, will be back another day.
Nothing caught.

Nil Return.

Short time trout fishing, evening and morning. Trout rising to dry fly; too quick for this old soul. Sporadic rises throughout day, especially the areas in the wood's shade. Stayed at Swanmeadow, lunch and a beer at The Black Bear, super.

Fished with G late evening down woodstream. I landed 4 and G 1 on partridge and orange and deerhair sedge 14 fished subsurface. Had fish on both. Reverted to dry at The Rock for last half hour and landed one at half pound and lost the best fish of around one and a half lb after a few minutes battle. Both took the wulff.
Great sport but need some rain to help the fishing.

7 Trout

Not as productive as Monday but still landed and returned 7 fish, best 12oz, with 5 taken on pheasant tail nymph with lureflash tail, and 2 late on on dry wulff including the largest which smashed the wulff when tweaked across the current below rock. Some good trout come up the streamy bit out of the Chine late on but they are very wary and difficult to get them to take.

7 Trout

River 0.4 and gin clear. Temp 30c at 7pm and still 24c at 10pm. John and I opted for trout fishing spider partridge and orange and small greenwells nymph subsurface in Woodstream and Top Run resulting in 11 for me and 5 for John from par to 12 oz. Good sport! All returned.
Switched to dry wulff size 14 at 9.30pm and had another 4 but some large trout showed in the streamy water below the rock but unable to tempt any of these. Suspect they had moved up from the pool late on. John had one more in tail of Chine pool.

21 Trout

No fish spotted, another disappointing day. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

1 x 15 inch WBT caught on PTN - all very quiet except for a leaping salmon.

Few fish rising, few LDO's other than that, very quiet, one caught and lost in same motion - on grey wolf.
