Blank. An interesting morning, though, when I really thought I might be in with a chance at times. Showers had provoked a slight "quick and dirty" rise in the level, although it was falling again by afternoon. One big trout banged into the fly as I was fishing down the top pool. Working through the run leading down to the Chine, a very large, though coloured, salmon showed itself once in front of me, as though excited by the rise in level....but didn't take. Below the bridge, I had a series of half-hearted nudges at the fly by what I think Falkus would have called a Hamlet fish. Stood there trying for him with different angles and different sizes of fly, rested, backed up etc, but he never did make his mind up to have it!

Water 0.63m and clear. Fished through rock and woodstream for salmon with no takes. No fish seen.
11am till 1pm fished the rock downwards with a team of 2 subsurface and landed a fish of 3/4lb. A few rising and reverted to a dry dark olive and landed another of same weight. Both returned.

Fished the afternoon and caught 1 stocked brown trout of about 3/4 lb on an olive gold head nymph. Missed a couple more on March Brown patterns - first time out and pretty rusty.... Surprised to see very few flies on the water on a nice afternoon.

Cold morning (2C) and an early start on the bright day - fished the Rock Pool and The Chime from left bank but saw no sign of Salmon, tried small and large flies on shooting head / sink tip, easy able to cover the water with a 15' rod.

Moved down below the bridge for the afternoon to the trout pools , and landed a small Sea Trout (<1lb) and a beauty of a brown trout at 2lbs+. River about a foot above summer height - wading ok but care required especially below bridge towards e overhead cables where there are a couple of holes; nice beat though, will come again.

Found the river slightly up and coloured but fishable. Started at the bottom of the stretch and between 11am and 12pm witnessed a phenomenal hatch of sedge (grannom?) in one pool. The water came alive with several sizable fish taking the flies with reckless abandon but could I catch one? No. I drifted every sedge imitation in my box over their noses but not an offer. Other than that, I fished the whole stretch up and down and without a touch, nor did the other angler on the water that day. All in all a frustating day compensated by glorious sunshine and scenery.
WUF Note: Trout feed on the grannom emerger and usually ignore dry sedge flies.

Arrived at 9a.m. to find river steady at 0.85m on the gauge and carrying a slight tint-encouraging.Showery and windy enough to test this embryonic speycaster. No luck with 3 hrs on the 15 footer. An excellent hatch of LDOs ensued at midday, accompanied by more than a smattering of march browns(the most I have seen in years). A few grannom appeared at 2pm. A feeding frenzy it wasn't. Must have seen at least 2 trout rise and didn't get a touch! Time for the river to wake from it's long hibernation.

Weather better (warmish drizzle) 0.7m on gauge. Fished Rock with 15 footer no sign of salmon. Moderate hatch of LDOs for 1 hour at 1pm. Still only a few trout rising. Caught one 1/2 pounder on an olive nymph (safely returned}Just a couple of grannom seen at 3pm. Lovely to be out after feeling stir crazy for the last month!
