9 degrees and still when I arrived, river at 1.5 on Mordiford gauge, with an 8.6 water temperature and a good tinge of colour. Started up near the middle fence on hemp and maggot feeder. An early small chub, avoiding the blank, was followed by a biteless hour. I then pulled out of a chub and barbel in consecutive casts. A swap to meat produced a nice chub and again a blank period so I moved downstream. A 3lb barbel was all from that swim and as JC from Reading who I'd met there had had a few fish I moved down again early afternoon. First swim was quite shallow so I moved again and second chuck on a GB feeder and a big bit of meat resulted in a lovely barbel of 9.02. JC had no more fish but a good result for both of us on a lovely mild winter's day.

Tricky days fishing. Managed a sea trout that took my ledgered bunch of maggots.
No barbel unfortunately!

I do quite like to chat to other anglers that use the Wye and usk foundation and 90% say that the prices are far too high for a days fishing (especially when it’s tough)
Every stretch that I have fished is neglected and you walk past a majority of the best parts of the river….where is our money being spent????

Fishing Passport Note: The banks of both the Wye and Usk are protected as a Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). There are, therefore, strict limits as to what can be done with regards bank clearance, which has to be done sensitively and in compliance with the law. Inevitably there will be many inaccessible sections at certain times of year and when there is little angler 'traffic'. The Wye is a wild river, please bear this in mind when booking Fishing Passport beats and don't assume fishery managers are not doing their job if some areas are overgrown. Pricing depending on conditions, i.e. 'tough' would be entirely unpractical.

2 barbel and 1 chub, I had both barbel in the morning and conditions were spot on so I was expecting a few more in the afternoon, unfortunately it didn't happen just a single chub around 4lb was all I had for the rest of the day.
Still a good day though for the time of year.
The biggest barbel was 8lb 8 the other around 5-6lb

Sadly blankety blank for me today. Tough conditions and packed up at 3pm when the wind became just too much. Tried many swims, tactics and baits but not even a knock all day.

First River Wye blank.
Numerous baits, tactics & swims tried to no avail. Even so, had a great day in a beautiful spot.

Beautiful winters day and given the recent floods and the river looking in prime condition we felt a feeding spell for Chub and Pike would be likely.
Things started well with a 12lb Pike for me. Dad was Chub fishing and getting wraps on bread. Lost a couple before finally getting one in the net at Chub of 4lb 9oz.
Love this beat and we’ll certainly be back again soon.
