Nic and I arrived to a very swollen looking river which was on the rise during the session (circa 20-30cm) fishing was tough and dropping on to the fish was the key. Both fished ground bait feeders with paste wrapped boilies and I fish meat from time to time. The Chub didn't seem to be the usual stamp with the best being around 3.5lb or so, the best barbel 7-8lb with two small ones amongst the 6 caught.

Turned up to find that the river level had gone up two feet overnight. The level continued to rise quite quickly and I had to evacuate my first swim. Tried one more swim before settling into a third swim well downstream. First barbel was 9.14 lbs and what a scrap in the fast water! Three more barbel followed as the light faded to make it a good day.

Fished here in August when you could walk half way across the river in one place so really nice to see it full, making the excellent swims accessible to the water, with a tinge of colour. Started wet and overcast but cleared to sunny intervals. Fished 3 swims down the bottom end losing a barbel second bung as my clutch was still tightened right down from pulling for a break last time out. Nearly got it off in time but 10lb hooklength broke at the knot. Arrgh! Was convinced this would be my only chance but with the clutch now set and a brand new hooklength on I had another banger an hour later which took line and line and line. On seeing a long streak of gold in front of me and 2 massive eruptions on the surface I knew it was a good fish before what looked close to my first Wye double had to be folded into the net. 10lb 3 and happy boy! Had to remove a barbed hook from the fish despite the barbless only rule. Had 3 more smaller fish 5 - 7lb and two small chub for a great day in a lovely peaceful spot. Thanks to WUF and the friendly land owners.
