The best small stream fishing I have ever experienced. I lost track of the exact number of trout I caught, but I can confidently say it was the most in any day of my fishing carer.

Most fish were 5 to 7 inches with the occasional larger trout. All were in perfect condition.

All but one trout were caught on bead head GRHE (size 14 or 16).

At about 4pm the sun came out and there was a hatch (quite large greeny yellow upwings, I'm no entomologist), and I caught one fish on a similar looking dry fly.

The most effective method was a sort of upstream nymphing with a retrieve slightly faster than the current to help aid bite detection, but due to the size of the river, tactics were dependent on the amount of room to cast.

Definitely worth the three and a half hour drive

River was a bit on the low side ,very difficult to navigate stretches of the water as a fence and a lot of cut down trees to get over , making some stretches impossible to get at.Only a few touches from small trout.

Another nice day on the Edw. Very good fishing especially towards the top half of the beat. Water still low and clear.
Trout up to 11" on the nymph in the faster water.

I have not fished the Edw for some years. It remains a very beautiful river although I may have forgotten just how overgrown parts of it can get by this time of year. I'm not sure I chose the best day either; it was windy and pretty chilly. After two or three hours of slow fishing, I decided to cut my losses and head down to the main river...

Only fished the top part of this beat for 2 h in the afternoon. Nice sunny and warm weather with lots of insects on the water.
Most trout caught on the nymph with the occassional one on the dry fly. Trout in the 6" to 10" range.

A very nice day again with lots of insects on the water. The occasional Mayflies are chased by the trout.
Despite the hatches most trout came to the nymph as the day before. Waterlevels seem to be very low and the water is very clear. Trout up to 12" came to the net. Wonderful day on the Edw.

While nothing much was jumping of its own volition there was no shortage of rises to a Parachute Adams - almost a fish in every glide and head of every pool. The challenge was finding the bigger fish with more than fifteen at the sub- 4 inch length prior to changing up to a bigger fly not counted in the final total. This, along with the abundant fly life (including Mays and Yellow Mays) bodes well for future seasons. I was very happy to bring 9 larger fish to hand, including three 9-10” fish.

The beat map could do with updating - the footbridge is no longer there and there is a useful footpath to the north of the river which helps with access. Also beat markers (but not the map) suggest that part of the left bank near the properties near the (former) footbridge is private. I didn’t get round to fishing the separate upstream part of the beat.

A great day on a lovely tranquil beat and such good value.
