After a few days of very heavy rain I returned to this beat for an evening session (5.30pm to 8.15pm) hoping to find some more water and fish on the feed. Surprisingly the level was only a few inches above last time - with just a bit more flow and water still gin clear. However this was enough to switch the trout on. In the first pool I landed 2, and missed 3 more. 8 were brought to hand, including several nice 12 inchers, with most at 9 - 11 inch. At least 3 times as many were missed, pricked or lost- all on dry parachute adams. Great sport for a few hours!

I arrived in a downpour which coloured up the already swollen Honddhu. It cleared by about 3pm and a few fish began to rise sporadically. There were quite a lot of flies at this point, including a number of mayflies! I caught 6 on a small grey klinkhammer. The best were 11" and 13", both rising steadily in very sheltered spots. Given the initial conditions and the strong downstream wind I was well pleased with this result.

A few hours 3.30pm - 7.30pm. A glance over the bridge at the start of beat will give you an idea of size and quantity of fish in here. There is a great head of fish. They are however incredibly spooky, and river level was extremely low. Recent rains had obviously had little if any affect here. The soft landing of a dry fly was often enough to send them bolting round the pools in a panic. Landed one 10 incher, lost another 2 fish, one of which was clearly well over 2lb. Unlucky today. 2 large salmon parr were also caught. On a good day, with a decent flow of water and a fly hatch some great sport could be had here.

Lovely here but water very low. Not much insect life and only a few trout rising. Fish very easily spooked.

Only managed an hour at about 6pm. Although it is low, it is worth fishing. I rose two fish on a dark cdc and missed both.

Nil return. Wind and squally showers made this a challenging day. A few fish rising, especially in the pool above the weir where there are some sizeable, but easily spooked, individuals which were more than a match for my rusty stalking skills. Didn't make it to the top of the beat which looks pretty wild from not far above the first bridge by the ford. Kingfisher, dipper, nuthatch and wagtails made up for the blank.

A tough day due to the cold rain, but the river was in the finnest form I've seen in some time. A number of fishing moving and taking dries in between the gusty winds, and a lovely 14" male fish brought to the net after taking an olive paradun.

A couple of hours or so session after a cooling Butty Bach at the Skirrid Inn . A couple of 10 inch fish on the dry soon after starting by the houses but then all quiet as I moved up. Wading up below the rail bridge a bitch otter decided to join in. That explains the lack of trout activity there then! Was a fabulous sight though and she has a holt just below the bridge.
By the way, I was camping at the Maes Y Beran campsite a few mile up the valley. Highly recommended if you like it simple and peaceful, right on the banks of the Honddu. No toilets etc though. No problem. The owner comes round for the dues in the mornings or evenings.
Llanthony Priory campsite further up has bit better facilities to those that want them and is a great site as well. There's a bar underneath one part of the priory!
Thanks to all at the WUF for all these and more opportunities!
