Arrived at 10am and fished till 12.30. The river coloured a bit as the morning went on from the overnight thunderstorms. Best fly hatch I have seen this season although the fish weren't impressed with no rises seen. Fished with 8 foot Tenkara rod and small Tungsten bead nymph. All fish caught in the heads of the pools.

Given the weather of the previous twenty four hours I wasn’t particularly optimistic as I arrived for my first outing of the season. The river was flowing swiftly and carrying quite a bit of colour. However, my 2.15 start at Hergest Bridge coincided with a dry spell. With no sign of fish and just the very occasional Large Dark Olive hatching I opted to go ‘duo style’ with a Klinkhammer and weighted GRHE. Two fish in the first hour came as a real bonus. Altogether it took two and a half hours of careful, steady wading to reach Mahollam Bridge by which time the rain had resumed. Two further fish came to hand making a total of four, ranging from 5”-8” and all to the nymph.

No fish caught, but a nice stretch of wild river to spend an afternoon on. A new-looking fence has been put up at the end of the field above the weir, which looked too tricky to cross without risk of damaging the fence or your tackle. This means the beat cannot be fished from start to finish in one go. Both parking points need to be used, and the beat divided into two sections.

Arrived mid-morning to find the river running clear. This, combined with the low, bright sunshine made it difficult not to spook the fish. Concentrating on the broken water and deeper shaded pools I winkled out four fish of about 6” and one splendid specimen of 12”+. All came to size 14 gold head PTN or GRHE. I didn’t venture beyond Mallhollam Bridge.

RIver was clear and fairly low after recovering from a bit of heavy rain two days before. Fly-fished (alternated nymph and small dries) most of upper half of the beat, and a couple of pools in the lower half. Caught just three small (but pretty!) trout, and had several others (v.small) come off the hook. One much larger fish leapt out of the water at the dry fly, but failed to take.
Very pretty section of river. Easy wading, but tricky casting among the alders to get at the best spots.
I camped at Bredward Farm (Camping & Caravanning Club CL) which was within walking distance of the beat, - a good site with friendly owners.

Common sense suggested it would be a waste of time but I just wanted to go fishing. In the event it was an enjoyable and productive session. The Arrow was very low but the pools below and immediately above the weir provided some sport. I tried in vain to tempt fish on the surface with a variety of dries. A change to Klinkhammer Duo with a GRHE below resulted in seven fish up to 10”, all to the nymph.

The Arrow at Kington is very low but there are still some holding spots for fish in some of the deeper sections; much of the beat was too slow and/or low to fish. The stretch just past the weir proved the most rewarding with half a dozen fish coming from one pool; which coincided with a hatch of small olives about 5pm. All fish taken on the surface with an 'F' fly.

I pretty much picked up where I left off a week ago. An afternoon and evening presenting an Adams, sometimes to a rising fish, at others into likely looking spots. I’ve no idea what the fish were feeding on but the Adams certainly worked. Ten fish to hand (5"-11") and many more lost or missed. Once again this magic little beat produced terrific sport. The river was low and clear making stalking all the more challenging with those little ‘sentry’ trout scooting up a pool to alert their larger brethren.

A lovely day, with several takes, but no fish! Despite few hatching insects, I had numerous takes within the streamier runs on a dry mayfly. Unfortunately none stayed on, but I had a couple of takes later in a deep pool on a goldhead. Never managed to explore the very top of the beat due to some excitable cows! Tip for accessing the lowest part of the beat - park in the layby and get in just below the road bridge, the walk under the bridge and start fishing!

I enjoyed myself here so much last week that I came back for more. Seven fish 6"-11", all to a Parachute Adams from the pools and slower stretches. Missed and lost many more. Another thoroughly entertaining session on this beautiful and varied Arrow beat.
