3 x trout 6-9 inches. It's still all about right place and right time, isn't it? A midday stroll up the Cannop Brook on a hot, sticky afternoon carrying a rod, resulted in no rising fish being seen at all. Then near the top end, while I was waist deep in a pool, the heavens opened and rain came down like stair rods for 10 minutes. I cowered under a branch and the hood of my rain jacket. Then first one may fly was up, then a second, then a third. I put a Monnow Gosling on, although I dare say any largish fly would have done, and caught three little trout without moving from the spot. 10 minutes after that, all the muddy water from side ditches came pouring into the stream and the fun was over.

Fished beadhead through the entire beat as fish were very reluctant to rise all fish were taken in heads of pools and faster glides. Due to water levels being so low those fish in more open areas were spooked at the slightest movement. All fish were between 6-9 inches . There was a decent shoal of dace and I took one of those and also saw several perch. Not sure if Cannop ponds hold these fish but pretty sure that's where they are from.

Lovely day water not too cold walking to bottom of beat had a treat watching a kingfisher then came across a small deer. Started fishing with no sign of a hatch but took one 7"brownie in the second pool with a grhe nothong else,to report except a lot of trees fallen into brook making a cast impossible in some likely spots.

After a lengthy chat with D.P. of Rugby on the bankside, having noted a few rises, I decided to have a few casts as the rain set in. Nothing rose to dry LDO patterns, so I opted for a single Beadhead PTN (my red holographic ribbed version) and achieved success within a few casts, with the first of 4 wild browns at approx 10" (I thought was a very good fish for this small brook). The others taken ranged from 4~6".....perfect little specimens. A very pleasing hour and a half's fishing, and my first trout of the season. :-)

Well what a difference a week makes. Lovely and warm on the Cannop Brook. There wasn't a single rise all day so decided from the off to fish single bead head nymph. Was slow up until about twelve only taking 4 trout. It slightly picked up for an hour or so and took another 8. Lost maybe 5 also. Plenty of Olives about by 2pm but still nothing rising to them. Little tanago rod very useful on this small brook.

I spent a very enjoyable 3 hrs working my way up this beat. Conditions were 4 deg, light snow and water level good. Not a fly in sight unsurprisingly, so very pleased with my 3 WBT all taken on a size 16 PTN gold head fished below a Klink NZ style. All fish were about 6 inches. I was using a 7ft 3wt which seemed about right. Despite its size there are some very deep pools which just cry big fish and I would have loved to bounced some bugs through them CZ style so if you can be bothered to carry a few rods with you then worth a go. I bought some knee pads for today's session and they really came in handy.
The only downsides to this beat are that towards the top there is quite a few tyres, pallets and other evidence of humans. Also I shared the beat with a boy coarse fishing and a found a bag a ground bait further down so I worry that river gets a lot more fishing (and not always fair either) than the foundation think.
But for less than a tenner I think this beat is a well worth a look. When the temp starts to rise so will the fish and I suspect you could take a lot of wild fish here.
