A lovely day for the start of the season. Blue skies for a change and no wind! The Honddu was running high, with some colour, thanks to snowmelt coming off the surrounding hills. Water felt like ice. Despite this, there was a hatch of olives around mid-day, but no rises. Slow going, but we landed half a dozen fish to nymphs between us and lost a couple. Best fish was 1.5lb to RM, in cracking condition for the time of year. Be warned, the banks are liquid mud in several places, especially around the sheep pens on the lower section.

First day of the season! Snow on Pen y Fan but sunny weather with a chilly breeze. River running clear but still a little high (0.7m on the Brecon gauge). Fished 11:00 - 15:00; water level dropped significantly over the 4 hours. No hatch and did not see a fish rise. Water running fast over the shallows so focused on a beaded PTN in the slower, deeper water of Llanobery Pool. Lost one good fish at the net.

Worse day fishing of my life. Only one fishable swim which had nothing. Slippery banks meant it’s probably best I didn’t catch anything. Lugged my gear up one mile stretch and back to find fishable swims and only found one. River was high, had emailed on Thursday to ask what to do if river high and received no response. Called number repeatedly and no answer. Was visiting river wye for my 40th birthday, absolutely gutted.
