The idea was to try trotting and I did explore most of the beat, but I think the fly rod might have been better today.

Fished with another member rod today .A nice height at 10” and clear. The river appeared completely dead with not one offer for either of us trying various nymph and sink combinations. A worrying trend with recent reports from flyfishers on other beats having similarly lean returns. Hopefully fishing will pick up when we have an increase in temperatures but it didn’t seem particularly cold today.

Crisp and chilly morning. Overcast. River had a good flow to it, but it did seem a little low, I guess we haven’t had rain for about two weeks. Fished with nymph (Pink Shrimp) on a Klinkhammer indicator. I was fishing the nymph at about 4 feet to start with, then in one of the deeper slower parts fo the river I decided to go down to about 6-7 feet. One grayling of about 10-12" resulted.
A slow day, but beautiful none the less. Unfortunately my waders didn’t miraculously patch themselves up over winter… freezing wet feet for most of the five hours, but great fun and it was lovely to be out on the river.

Quite a pace to the water today with c.18" clarity, Showing .51 on the Byton level. Freezing, foggy start however the sun burnt through by 11am into a glorious, sunny day. All fish caught trotting maggot, primarily in the upper section. Only a couple of small ones, mostly in the 10 to 16 inch range.
