Flow still a bit quick today with the river only falling back slowly after the spate since Christmas. 1’10” but clarity reasonably good. All of the fish were good chunky adults 10-14” bar one juvenile grayling.
Almost all came to heavy grayling bugs and nymphs in a 45minute spell after midday, below the bridge when they switched on.
They switched off just as quickly and takes were few elsewhere .The temperature didn’t get above 3 degrees ,but worth getting out on a lovely crisp day.

Tough conditions, water was very cold. Presumably snow melt had worked its way down from Wales. Very few bites apart from trout that took a liking to luncheon meat.

Have been watching the gauge and the river now at a manageable level, although the weather made it a challenge - still but bitingly cold. Water pretty clear in the lower reaches of the beat but less so as I moved upstream. 8+ cormorants in the shallows at the top of Lady Alexander's Catch, I've always seen them solitary or in pairs, not sure who was more surprised as I waded around the bankside bush. Nymphing, using a variety of patterns - sadly failed to find the fish but great to be on the river after so long.

I arrived to find the river just inside its banks in the morning, by the time I'd left it had flooded the field behind me, the only swim I could fish was the slack water at the start of the beat, I thought this would be the case anyway before I left home but was still hopeful for a barbel or two, unfortunately I didn't manage any.
