The BWO's are hatching. Good hatch and a heavy rise, the best I have seen all season, was underway when I got to the water at 7.30pm. Action slowed around 8.40pm, with bits and pieces thereafter. No real spinner fall. 9 trout brought to hand in a couple of hrs, 2 small ones and 7 over 1lb 4oz, with the best fish of 2lb 4oz, the last fish of the evening leaving teh pool tail and taking me for a ride though 100m of fast water. Lost/bumped off a number of other good fish, including a 3lber that I saw clearly. Had my best Usk trout for 4 years last weekend with a fish of 3lb 12oz. The evening fishing on the Usk is very good at the moment.

3 hours afternoon on the lower half. A bit difficult to find the start of the beat as the nettles and weeds are now neck high. The river is in good condition even though quite clear. A few flies and a handful of rises but I stayed with a PTN below a Klink. A few rises to the Klink but no takes. Two small trout and one decent sized one to the PTN, a small grayling took the PTN just before I packed up. All fish live to fight another day.

Beautiful setting with some very nice scenery. Variety of water with some nice glides and fast runs including broken water. Very difficult day with water levels low and gin clear water. Only managed two trout between us. Lots of potential and some good fish seen, just couldn't get near them.

Rather fortunately the lousy weather forecast during the week did not happen but probably helped keep the boat traffic down considerably....only 500 going past as opposed to the usual 5000 on sunnier days.Be prepared for plenty of swimmers too who sometimes take a break and stand up in your swim....gives you a good idea of depth though and I guess the fish are getting used to these new intruders.Fishing was very good and the Barbel were all a good stamp and nice sized fish....no sign of the pocket rocket Barblets which is unusual for here. Some good Chub too and caught a few 8oz fish and one clonking Dace trotting pellet and corn. The Barbel fought hard and I am delighted to report they were full of beans going back.

A welcome return to our old friend Carrots. Once again she didn't fail to entertain even though the bag may not sound very impressive at 7 chub. But 6 of these were on the trot which made for truly excellent sport - some from the croys including one at super long range, and some from the very fast run just upstream of the Lugg confluence. The best fish was about 4 and a half pounds and put up one hell of a fight in the strong current. All on bread flake.
Undoubtedly one of our favourite beats on the river to whom we shall no doubt return next year.
The absence of the barbel was the only disturbing aspect of our annual 3 day pilgrimage. Of course it may be "operator error" or even "operator incompetence" but a scan of the returns thus far seems to suggest a sharp reduction in numbers. Does anyone have any more scientific data and/or explanations for this very worrying finding? (WUF?) Is it connected to the ridiculously high phosphate levels?
