A friend and I booked the day, we arrived on the beat about 8.30am, it was raining slightly, but conditions were perfect. We parked the car about 300m down from the last fishing hut, not far from the pipe bridge. Fish were rising all day, but the river was low, we could have done with about another foot of water. We caught 4 brown trout in total, as well as losing 2 more. All 4 fish were less than a pound.

We both started off with wet flies, coachman, but as the day progressed and we fished some slower parts we moved to dry flies, cadiss and olives. We will definitely book again, but maybe a month earlier when there is more depth.

Just as a note for the instructions on how to find the beat, they were perfect, what3words is a great tool, the only thing I would say is there were no white pegs to follow and as soon as you go through the gate with the combination lock, turn left on to the grass and follow the vehicle marks along the river.

- Morning was more productive than evenings. The fish fed aggressively between 8-12.
- Fish were focusing on emergers throughout the weekend
- Fussy on dry fly but were happy to eat nymphs.
- Most fish taken near the middle & heads of pools as well as broken runs / pocket water.
- Size 18-20 PTN variants worked best with silver and rose gold beads very effective.
- Most fish 18-25cm with some fish between 32-42cm
- Fished 5:30 to 21:00

Only fished from 2.30pm onwards. Very little fly life all day - the occasional yellow may dun later in the afternoon. Only very small fish rising. All trout caught were small (15-20cm), most on caddis pupa and emerger patterns. Hoped I’d find a decent fish or two feeding late on, but sadly no. Finished around 9.30pm.

Late afternoon was disturbed by group of people on the opposite bank coming to swim and mess about in the river. I think they were staying in Abernant House on the opposite bank. They effectively ruined fishing over 200+m of river for over an hour.

Another fantastic day at Fownhope. Plenty of Chub but we think the Barbel are still spawning. I only hooked one Barbel but unfortunately it ended as a 'one that got away story'. The others were both eels caught on luncheon meat.
