Attempted to fish this beat today but unable to access start point due to dense vegetation and steep bank not allowing safe entrance to the stream. I will make a note that early season may be a better time to fish this section of the Dulas.

This beat is now so overgrown as to be almost unfishable in summer, blocked and slow moving pools are heavily silted with considerable brown algal bloom clinging to the stones. I spent so long working my way through obstacles in the hope of a fishable pool further up there was not time to try the middle beat, which was probable a better prospect.

First time on this beat nothing rising and very limited fly life on the water so decided from the off to fish 2.5mm gold tungsten baetis nymph on size 16 jig hook. started at 10.30 and by 11.30 had brought 8 to the net, then I walked into to a deep pool and over my waders it went and flooded my top, underneath which was housing my smokes! heavy bummer so off to shop for another pack. Was back in the water for 12.30 and what activity there was had totally ceased, it was about 1.30 when they took up the heads of pools again and managed another eight in this hour then again it switched off so decided to call it a day..size wise between 7-13 inches and was smashed by a decent fish in one of the deeper pools. Several also hooked and lost due to overhanging branches and losing tension on fly line. I fished with my seven foot cane rod and this was easily a foot to long

Fished the lower and middle beats together. Beat is fairly overgrown, so casting difficult, so reverted to short line / Czech style. Even with a short rod (7"6) still tricky. In summer likely to be impossible for large parts of the beat.
Took one small brownie to a tungsten head nymph on the point. Beat low and clear, didn't spot many fish.

Always exciting to fish a previously unfished beat. Easy, safe parking about 5 minutes walk from the beginning of the beat. Water seemed a little low and the early autumn canopy was a hindrance all day. Persevered with dries and winkled out 5 wbt. One a handsome 11"er.
For me the beat improved as you work your way up. Relatively simple wading and I suspect more open and accessible for casting earlier in the season. That's when I shall give this beat another go.
If you have the energy and an early start an angler (Wild Stream Season Permit holder) could carry on and fish the middle section beat as well in a single day. Now there's a thought.

Water levels quite low and very clear, making it difficult not to be seen. Shame about the litter in the water from the caravan park.

Great stream, perfect dry fly water sunken down banks and overhanging trees make it feel very peaceful. Took a while to work out the hatch in the end all trout fell to a size 20 elk hair caddis, a few mayflys also about suspect there is a good hatch here. Best of the trout was about 12in although I disturbed what I estimate to be a 2lb fish in a pool at the top of the beat. One note is that just past the caravan site there is a section where trees overgrown the stream, preceded by a very deep hole that you need to pass as a tree has fallen on one side making it impossible to pass, got up to the limit of my chest waders before I chickened out. Had to exit here and climb a fence to get round and back in. Overall perfect wild stream and don't miss out the caravan sit section there were loads of fish rising in the pools and runs below it.
