A much more benign river that on my last visit a fortnight ago. Pleasant day weather-wise too. Determined to get to grips with French Nymphing, I had the 10 ft 3wt rod in the car but, with the bottom of the beat needing a longer cast, started off with a 4wt and a conventional upstream nymph. I caught Grayling, and good Grayling - with the exception of a couple of smaller fish, and a couple of larger fish, all of my fish today were in the 12-14" bracket - right from the off (so much so that the 3wt was to remain in the car). 3 or 4 fish from the bottom of the beat, followed by another half a dozen from the broken water at the top of the first meadow. Picked of a few skittish fish in The Gutter, before finding a shoal of fish in the broken water at the top of the bottom of the beat (if you get my drift). Probably should have stayed on this shoal but, after half a dozen fish, my stomach told me it was time for lunch
Up to the top of the beat in the afternoon. Less prolific that the morning; the top of the beat is more open and, as such, catches the wind - which I had not noticed in the morning. Very bright by then as well. Lower numbers maybe, but my afternoon catch included fish of 17" and 18" (which would be close on 2.5 lbs in old money). Bizarrely, other than one fish (a good one too), that took the nymph, jumped three feet into the air, and threw the nymph, in less time than it takes to tell the tale, I did not see a Trout all day
A very good day. Let's call it 20 shall we. Home to my lovely wife's delicious chicken in a cider, tarragon, mustard and cream sauce. Tres bonne
20 Grayling

Arrived early doors on this new beat, high pressure, blue sky and low water levels.
Fishing proved to be difficult despite moving swims 3 or 4 times trying to locate the elusive Barbel, ledgered meat, pellet & corn with meat coming out on top, with a couple of Chub obliged saving me a blank on another hard day, lovely beat cant wait to return on a day with better conditions..
First class directions, thank you WUF for another enjoyable day on the Wye.

water was low and warm. Mostly weather was hot and sunny and in the afternoon was I competing with canoes and dog walkers!! . Some salmon moving in the morning. The pools at the lower end of beat were hard to access from bank due to combinations of steepness and high nettles!

First time at Honddu Half Moon. This remote beat is beautiful with crystal clear water. Parking is 80 yards from the river. Access is easy (once found), as well as wading. The beat is well looked after, in the wild streams standard, with not much overgrown vegetation in summer.
Fished the duo with 4WBT to hand around 6"-8". 3 took s16 olive PTN and one took s12 Klink. Missed 5 on the Klink. The fly was possibly too big. However stopped getting any rise once downsized to s14 or s16. Put s12 back on and the rise came back but kept missing. I guessed the fish wanted something mouthful.
