not a bite all day and then just before i was hoping for something.....local farmer in the field upstream decided to cut down hunks of tree which he felled into the river.. these bushes and branches then drifted into my swim which made further fishing impossible

River was spot on just missing a little bit more colour. Couldn't buy a bite all day, my dad was lucky to nick a barbel very early on. Wildlife was superb looking forward to my next trip to the beat in August.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

Grayling caught trotting. Most caught from a shaded pool on a bright sunny day. One from open water in the evening. So much water to cover, we barely scratched the surface though we noticed that above the Llangoed Pool (ignoring Home Catch) there is lots of gravel, below seems to be mainly rocky gutters. Studded waders a must throughout. Steep banks to negotiate as well. Though I personally love all the scrambling. There's a patch of Japanese Knotweed just above the Orchard - worth treating as not massive - yet.

Some flood debris in pegs, making access a bit tricky. River was in good condition but water temp was only 8 degC resulted in poor fishing

Area:Monnow
Beat:Skenfrith
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:2
No sign of grayling. Two rods ( one very experienced) fished nymphs all day for one oos 9" trout. After several trips to the Monnow at Skenfrith this winter two issues have emerged: Oliver Burch's reports of a reduced fish population in the last two years at this beat are convincing and the recent well above inflation price hike was not well timed.
Parking: we did not park at the pub but used the area in front of the castle and we found the local people were very friendly.
