Today was my first attempt at small river fishing. I arrived at the beat at around 9:30am. It was quite breezy and cloudy. I started fishing at the pool near the bridge at the top with an orange pearl tungsten nymph. Slowly made my way down the beat. I had one good take just below the riffles by the bridge, I'm not sure what species it was as it got off the hook as I was about to land it. A bit disappointing as this was the only take I had in this session. I tried a few other Czech nymphs further down the beat to no avail, the weather got progressively worse as the say progressed, and so I decided to head home around 1pm. Today was a real learning curve for me. I will be back here in the near future.

A difficult day, with a brutal down stream wind. Nevertheless, it was great to be out, having been cooped up in the office all week. We managed to find half a dozen small fish towards the bottom of Bachawy Pool (in the deeper water). As ever, the Pink Shrimp was working best (middle dropper). A lovely beat, with safe, off-road parking and a short walk to the river. Look forward to swinging those Spiders, come the Spring!

Could not resist another winter visit to this lovely venue. Especially after my last visit the week before and with the level at 0.55m and 5.6 degree water temp, lots of fry still active and warmer weather I had a feeling it was worth another session. I did expect Chub and hopefully the odd Barbel to feed. It was very windy, but not too much trouble. Fished 11am till 4pm. I used open end feeder, plugged with GB and filled with hemp and maggots. After a hook and line change, lighter gauge, i was in. Had two beauties 5-10lb and 5-6lb and the others ranging between 3lb and 4.5lb. My 10 year son came along to watch and he was loving the day out. Chub-tastic he called it. A fabulous winters day fishing on the old maggots

Reasonably promising conditions but no fish caught (or indeed detected). This despite trying all the likely swims with likely flies, likely swims with unlikely flies, unlikely swims with likely flies and finally... you get the picture. Still it beats working.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

Fished GPAIAC today 11- 3.30 p.m. RIver 1.15m. Water 4 deg C and air warmer at 4-8 degrees than yesterday for sure. Very still as well and saw LDOs on the water from arrival until 2 p.m., plus I saw some midge but no sippers. Heard and saw a few rising fish close in the margins and foam lanes but concentrated on trotting maggots. Did, as usual, take the fly rod as well and, after trotting, chucked out a Universal Baetis Ducks Dun where I'd seen a fish rise about an hour or so earlier. Rose one but missed it - rusty! Good to see that "my old faithful UBDDl" still pulled up fish rising to LDOs again in 2019! Bring it on. Found a pod of beautiful decent-sized ladies with all fish 14 fish of 13-15", the latter weighing in at 1.5lb. Plus some OS trout - some wildies, others stockies. Got broken first cast by what I suspect was a salmon which appeared time and again for about an hour. Also spent some time fishing some pretty featureless water as well, with the expected results - "nothing ventured" etc etc! A lovely day. Have attached a pic of one of today's LDO s as a sign of things to come - I hope! Tight lines to all for 2019!
