Always a pleasure to fish Middle Hill and despite it being a gloomy blustery day the backdrop of late Autumn colours in the trees was a real delight. The sheep were their usual well mannered selves and moved on quietly on our arrival unlike the resident pheasants and partridges who seemed a bit edgy.....but it was firework weekend so kind of understandable!!
No action until late afternoon but the light feeding approach worked and we caught 7 quality Chub for a very enjoyable day.

First time on this stretch. Well kept and some nice water but the constant traffic on the road near their far bank spoiled it for me. Two chub to about 5lb. Very clear for the Wye and quite low.

10 x grayling 10-15 inches, Grayling Steel Blue plus one on a Pink Shrimp. Typical November afternoon, warm, dark, windy and rain on the way. Lots of wild-fowl flying fast overhead and the last of the leaves falling now.

Nymph fishing. River looked beautiful, water cold and clear, but looking suspiciously like leaf soup. Cold strong winds didn't diminish the pleasure of being on the water, even with such a modest return.

Cold and windy. Water clear and full of floating leaves. NO LDO hatch and no rise. All fish caught on nymphs. Some larger grayling to 16" from the long glide towards the bottom of the beat on dead drifted nymphs. Smaller trout and grayling from the top half of the beat. Very varied stretch of water and well maintained.

The water was very clear and quite low and a little chilly. I persevered with nymphs in the morning and was rewarded with just 1 grayling. Then I tried spiders around lunchtime and they saved what was quite a tough day. I ended with 8 grayling between 7 and 15 inches and a small trout. I also lost a few and missed a few takes. Only saw 3-4 rises all day. Lovely to be out on the water though and the beat is great.

Scraping ice from the car windscreen on a clear sky freezing morning did not fill us with much confidence before heading off to the Creel. We arrived to a glorious early winters day but a very cold river...But much to our surprise we found the obliging Chub feeding and bagged 13 good fish with all the action in the afternoon.Another highlight was noticing a lesser spotted woodpecker resident on the beat which was somewhat unexpected and capped a great day.
Thanks WUF..
