The river was down to around a metre on the Ross gauge and the weather was mild so I decided to give the fishing a try. After over three hours in two swims without a touch I caught a smallish chub late in the afternoon, followed by two more. Then on the last cast, as darkness fell, I had a barbel. Only around the 5lb mark, but a good end to a hard day. All the fish on halibut pellet.

Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
2 x grayling 11 inches and 19 inches, leaded Red Tag and Tungsten Hare's Ear. River clear and still pretty high at 0.65, but I was able to drop into a couple of pools. No shoal of any size contacted and just a couple of fish found, but one was a real specimen. By lunchtime leaking waders forced an early retreat

The river looked perfect 0.6 and almost clear. Despite our efforts searching with a variety of nymphs and the five of us just could not find fish, covering all but the last bend at very top of the beat. We saw a few early olives hatching but no rises. One grayling of 13" caught and one trout 10" pricked and lost both on pink shrimps. A very enjoyable day out on the water nonetheless.

Didn't stay long, I couldn't make it through the wooded area the journey was too arduous through mud and fallen trees. Take my advice if you intend to fish the woodland swims travel as light as possible it's a long walk. The bank along the meadow swims is mostly inaccessible, I managed to access 2 areas which were very muddy and not much room to manoeuvre . Having said all that I have to say Peter, the fishery manager was very kind with his advice and answering the phone when I needed him. Maybe I'm getting too old for this sort of fishing.

We caught five grayling, which were all about 1lb, using weighted bugs and nymphs. The river was clear but quite high, as a result we were not able to access all pools we would like to have.
We look forward to fishing this beat again when the river is a little lower. MP & RJ.
