Lovely location. Bright sunshine all day. So not great conditions for barbel.
Fished till lunchtime. 6 small chub on 8mm spicy sausage.
More than enough swims to access. Bit of a walk to deeper section from orchard parking on a hot day.

Managed to get down for a couple of hours after work and had one WBT around 10in on a small nymph. A warm evening and river running crystal clear. A few fish rising, but no takes on the dry flies. Stunning stretch of the USK, very tranquil

Seemed to be Chub everywhere, very difficult to get to river, which had a brown tinge, due to bankside vegetarian , all fish caught on robin red pellet & feeder tactics

Fishing Passport Note : Beat access improvements are due to take place on 25th June 2024

A superb days fishing, 9 wild brown trout and 6 grayling, a few of them a decent size, 14 plus inches. I didn't see any fish rising all day, all fish caught nymphing. Conditions were good, river in good flow, lots of runs and pools especially from the bridge heading up stream for a few hundred meters, I only fished this section. KM.

First visit to Thomas Wood fishery and first visit to the river for a long time. Its surroundings, scenery and wildlife had been sorely missed. Within a short time of leaving the car, buzzard, red kite, kingfisher, grey wagtail and chiffchaff had all come to say hello.
River was still coloured from the rain a few days ago. Switching from feeder / pellet to free-lined luncheon meat, together with a roving approach, helped to keep the bites coming. Busy with canoes in the afternoon but most were courteous and capable so no major disruption. Lost three good chub (one at the net) but a very enjoyable day was had.
6 chub to circa 3lb and two barbel to 5lb 4oz graced the net.

Not the best day i'm afraid... having fished this beat early in the season on a few occasions, i have fairly good idea of what it should be like when times are good (having caught really well in the past). For reasons unknown, the fish just weren't playing ball on this visit, the level was a little higher than on previous visits but even so.. .I started in the pylon run where i'd usually expect to have several bites... nothing. Then moved up to the first croy, a 3lb-ish chub on the second cast there seemed to herald a brighter future but it wasn't to be. Called it a day at lunchtime. Usually on this beat, i'm tearing my hair out trying to avoid the chub to get through to the barbel. I'd expect activity of some sort - plucks and taps on the tip from less committed fish - on virtually every cast. I can honestly say with the exception of the fish i caught, there was nothing. I did trot a float through from the first croy and the largest croy, all to no avail. That's fishing sometimes. I will be back to put this right later in the season. Thanks as always to Glynn, interesting chats on all things fishy and especially his friendly pointer Conker who brought me some good luck for the one bite i had!
