Beat:Ty Newydd
Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:5
9 anglers from Charfield Angling Association enjoyed a day on the Upper Wye, with 5 anglers on Ty-Newdd and 4 on Gromain. They caught plenty of trout to 13" and grayling to 15", on both dry flies, light nymphs and heavy nymphs on both beats. The most successful were those that managed to sink small nymphs in the deep runs on Gromain. Approximately 25 from Ty-Newdd and 55 from Gromain, with about 2/3 of those grayling. A very enjoyable day. About 10" on the Llanstephan gauge.

Second time on this beat, the first time was back in the spring when I had a fantastic day's fishing. This time things were much more difficult with 30mph winds, thankfully the river here is quite sheltered by the high banks but even so at times there where waves going upstream! Luckily, apart from the wind, the weather was dry and fairly warm and the river looked spot on.
The first field has no access to the river, or none that I could find, the second field is better but does involve climbing down steep banks, however once in the river the wading is very easy, the only difficulty being when the water becomes too deep. From here on access improves but there are still sections of water which seem to be inaccessible.
This is a gorgeous bit of river with some great fish holding areas, the best of which seems to be the faster water with decent depth right at the top of the beat downstream of the bridge, it was here I took two very large trout on my first visit. Today though there was very little fly life, none of the 200 billion promised crane flies made an appearance, just a few very small flies which were bringing the odd trout up, one 10' in front of me which I tempted with a small dry tied by myself on the third attempt, an average fish of around 11" but very welcome on a difficult day.
Thank you WUF for another lovely day on this beat.

Starting at the top end of the beat we had a couple of barbel. A move downstream provided a few more, all caught on pellet with feeder/pva tactics. Anyone fishing in the coming days should watch out for a wasp's nest in a swim at the bottom end of the beat. The last couple of hours provided a lot of action at the top end. A great day on this stretch, we'll be back!

Started off in the top field and followed instructions on parking. However after starting fishing I heard some crunching noises behind as the cows and bull were headbutting my car with Significant damage caused to several panels. Shocking. Please other anglers beware here.
Moved downstream for a few hours and caught a couple of chub and a barbel.
I can't say I will be returning after having my bmw trashed.
WUF note: We were very sorry to hear about this incident. Cattle are, unfortunately, a potential hazard to both anglers and their vehicles. Our "What to Do" guide we send out with every booking advises anglers never to leave vehicles in fields in which cattle are present, even if that is where we have suggested you park. Cattle are always moved into a field without us being informed so please check carefully before parking to ensure that none are present.

Four of us fished today. One only for the last few hours. Conditions were not ideal. Low water and mostly bright sun. By mid afternoon only a few Chub had been caught, although the best ar 4lbs 3ozs was a nice fish. Don came down in the afternoon and following his advice we moved upstream and 3 of us caught in the last hour of daylight. 4 barbel between us, the best 9lbs 6ozs. One notable capture was an eel that weighed 2lbs 10ozs.

Ideally would have arrived earlier and left later but time constraints meant I only had the middle of the day. Fished two swims downstream from the middle entrance. The nearside gulley looks perfect. One bite, one small chub.

Another great day on the Wye. Fished the bottom pool. River was very low. Heavy canoe traffic. On the other side of the river (unfortunately in front of me) the cows visited several times. Fished till 17:00. All barbel were small but good to see this for the future of this picturesque river. Used feeder tactic. Thank you WUF.
