What a disappointing day. Walked over the hill and round back into the woods, fished opposite the line of rocks, water was running fast, looked so fishy. Had a couple of knocks but not a fish. After lunch moved back up to near the fishing hut, not even a bite. Never mind weather was good. Need a bit of colour in the water. Off to Upper Backney tomorrow.

Beat was excellent and Barry the owner most helpful. Found it easily accessible from the caravan park side. A few fish showing here and there including one big salmon. Felt we got tactics reasonably well suited to conditions, trying some spinning but mainly stuck to fly for salmon and sea trout.
Other than the two trout not a touch or follow all day though. Would like to try again but perhaps need to review time of year.

Water was gin clear making fish very picky. Steady rises to various upwings throughout the day and despite many fly changes they didn't seem interested in imitations. Rises were in flat water making it even more tricky.
2 fish from faster water on elk hair caddis fishing duo and one on a gold head hares ear. A lovely beat with lots of fishy looking water but not a massively productive day.

All Trout were small, under 6 inches taken on V. small Nymphs fished upstream. Had one Grayling of similar size but best of the day were 2 Grayling on Dry Fly
when a hatch briefly came on mid afternoon. These were around the 10" mark. A nice beat, compact & enough for one in lower water.

River looked in good condition, fairly clear but not too low. Lost a nice grayling within five minutes of starting and took an hour to locate the next one. Fish were rising on and off but I stuck with nymphing tactics and caught a succession of grayling between 8 and 17 inches long. (The largest one I would guess was approaching the 2lb mark, if not just over) Also landed a very lively 12 inch brownie. Successful flies were red tag, pink beaded PTN and waterhen bloa fished on a conventional rod and reel with one 12 inch grayling taken on a tenkara rod armed with a partridge and orange. All fish returned.
