Unfortunately another blank day for us, although Jeannie and I both did see a salmon come up to investigate our flies but neither fish was tempted enough to take them.

I had intended to fish for salmon, but the day didn't start well. For one thing the level had unexpectedly dropped 4 inches overnight, although the water still had that strong peaty brown stain. More seriously, in a senior moment I had forgotten to pack my salmon reel in the car. Thankfully I still had a trout rod in the vehicle. 9 x grayling to 15 inches and 5 x trout to 12 inches on various dry flies, although there was a remarkable lack of natural insects or rises.

First visit to Fownhope and not the last! Overcast and normal water levels. We looked to fish the final field past the woods to begin with but found no accessible swims! So we had to settle in just after the woods, a slow start no fish but signs of feeding, then got into the swim we called The Stones in the woods opposite a line of stones on the other bank, fished in the main flow for the barbel around 4 pounds and the 2 chub both around 3 pounds, also losing a few good barbel all on meat and pellets. To finish we fished the first field by the fishing hut found it hard to get fish feeding and only managed 2 slimey eels !! And last knockings we got chub feeding on the surface. Lots of salmon leaping all day.

River was reasonably clear and seemed in good condition, weather bright and sunny. We fished Beat 2 selecting swims where there was plenty of flow. Caught just the one Chub, about 3 1/2lbs and in beautiful condition.

No fish caught all day! Visit this beautiful fishery, but don't bother wasting your money on a day permit just walk round and admire the wonderful setting.surley this fishery could become much better if a better restocking policy was in place, as an experienced angler I have never visited such a poorly operated reservoir. Come on get your act together and stop ripping people off, just have a look at your reviews.

Lovely stretch but difficult choosing a peg because ya can't seem to get on the east water, struggled but one barbel of 9lb was caught plus chub and eels. Baits used were meat and pellets. The wildlife on display was fantastic in beautiful scenery.

I fished this delightful beat between 4 and 6.30 pm. The river level was a bit lower than when I last visited, but otherwise in excellent condition. I fished dry, mainly Adams and Sedge. As with my experience at Chainbridge the previous week, the anticipated rise never really materialised. This remains one of my favourite stretches of river anywhere however and the consoling pint at the Bell is the perfect way to round off a day spent fishing rather than catching.

Plenty of fish about. Conditions perfect. Must be me. Great day. Lots of canoes with little idea how to negotiate an angler so clearly not briefed.
