Arrived at lunchtime after a spur of the moment decision to go fishing after seeing the glorious Spring sunshine in the morning. The river was more full than up and carrying a nice turquoise tint, the sun was still shining although it was to become a little duller as the day went on with a temp. of 10C. While the sun was shining there were a few Olives coming off so I desperately searched for a rising fish or two but sadly saw no surface activity all the while I was there, wanting to put a bend in my rod I opted to fish the deeper pools with weighted nymphs. I took two nice oos Grayling, one 15 inches and a small trout. By now it was duller and colder and the little bit of fly life that had been present earlier in the afternoon had now disappeared, I was getting hungry too so packed up and made my way home. This is a glorious place to be and I shall be back when it's a bit warmer, even if I did rip my waders again on the barbed wire!

Started the day with clear blue sky and rather chilly - but warming up during the morning. Intermittent cloud cover in the afternoon. Water was clear and temperature was ok, height was 0.32m on the Brecon gauge.
Lots of fish in the flats at the top end and also below the bridge. Managed to tempt two nice WBT off the top with small dry white/pale yellow may.
Got one using the "upstream/downstream" method. This is where you cast upstream and the fly lands behind you due to a very strong downstream gust of wind. Must try that again.......
Gate combi working ok.

Five trout to the nets, Olives and Iron blues. A nasty draft down the river for most of the day hindered presentation but patience and a few calmer moments helped us prevail. No Usk gold by any stretch of the imagination but AB finished his week end Usk experience with a grin.

The water was a foot above ideal [0.84mtr @ Ross] and the colour of tea which made wading less than ideal and the fly almost invisible. Not to worry, a fat trout found it! A spell with the spinning rod produced nothing either but that didn’t matter as I had just spent 45 minutes filming an otter that was porpoiseing around me in search of small eels, fantastic!
I did take the opportunity to test my theory regarding a #8 rate switch rod from the right bank to bottom of beat and yes it can fish through with either a short back-cast or a roll cast, accessing the run opposite the island too. Ideal for the summer month perhaps?

Sunny and warmer than it has been (~10oC) but with a fresh downstream wind. Water clear and 11in on the gauge. Started at 11:00 and had a 1 1/4lb on the nymphs upstream of the bridge. Moved downstream of the bridge and at 12:30 a hatch of march browns started. Good number of fish rising to them. Had 5 up to 2lb on a parachute. At 13:30 the hatch stopped and all went quiet. Fished nymphs all the way to the end of the beat and had another 4.

4 trout caught, 3 others released. Caught with worm on the bottom. Excellent condition fish. 1 had a large hole in the side which looked like a cormorant or heron had had a go but overall in good condition and healthy.
