Really lovely stretch of river, however the banks have a lot of rubbish which is disappointing. Conditions were excellent and there are a lot of very nice pools and runs. Started at Quakers Yard station and worked my way upstream for about a mile. Landed one small trout on a Nymph and missed a few others. I am sure a more skilled angler than I would have caught a few more considering the conditions.
MTAA Note: We know that we have a problem with waste/rubbish. The association does various clean ups on parts of the river with Keep Wales Tidy and just normal members doing their bit. However, with the river Taff being an urban river it is pretty hard to keep up with it all. In time we hope to eradicate all rubbish.

had a few hours today on the Bideford brook overnight rain had risen the stream and added a slight amount of colour which made for perfect nymphing. fished 12-3pm nymphing the heads of the pools and brought 28 to hand and having several slip the hook also. all between 5-9",taking size 18 2mm black tungsten baetis nymph with a hint of orange at the thorax. Plenty of fly on the water LDOs, a few Grannom and midges but only two rising fish spotted which were both brought to hand on the nymph...

Nil. My first time on this beat and it was a beautiful spring day. Sunshine interspersed with fluffy clouds, about 12 degrees, soft southerly breeze. Should have been perfect. But, the river was pushing through stronger and higher than I had anticipated. I read that this beat has challenging wading at the best of times but today the river height made acces very hard, even in chest waders. There was a hatch of LDO but no rises seen. A beat for lower water I think. The gauge at Abergavenny was 1 foot 8 inches. 4 kayakers seen.

River slightly coloured and was rising slightly during the day. Lots of olives on the water most of the day, did not see any fish rise for them. I did not catch anything tried all sorts of nymph methods, it was my first time on this river. I would like to come back later in the year.
First class service from W & U foundation, first time I have used them.

Lovely weather to be out but some overnight rain saw the river rising through the day. It started off clear but had risen considerably and coloured up by about 4pm. There was a small hatch of LDOs late morning which never really got going, but the most tremendous March Brown hatch which lasted the best part of an hour. The river was littered with MB duns but barely a fish rose to them. Very frustrating. The height of the river made it difficult to find somewhere to fish properly. I blanked but Andreas managed 2 trout, one to an LDO emerger and another to a spider pattern. One of the toughest days I can remember on the Usk, but as always, a pleasure to be out. 4 canoes spotted - at least they were polite. This is my second consecutive trip on a WUF beat where canoes / rafts have paddled through the beat and you can tell from their gear that these are serious paddlers and not some lads having a bit of jaunt. What's to be done?

Fished the morning in the rain in spring pool. Had one strong pull and had to change the fly a black and orange tube fly 1" but no fish hooked. Then moved on to Dolmeudwy pool but unfortunately the river was up and coloured. Very nice beat will try again later in the year.

Beautiful stretch of river, but high and rising water levels and a cold wind made fishing a bit of a chore. No fish seen and no takes. Shame as fished here last June and had lots of very decent fish on dry and wet flies.
