A moral blank. Other than the first fish, which wasn't landed, the others were of no size. A beautiful beat, but a very challenging day.

Water at 11" on Fownhope gauge, 62F, cloudier than expected after overnight rain. Cloudy am and rain / sun pm. No rise in water. Many salmon showing in Vanstone throughout the day and a few others in other pools. About 150 canoes between 11:00 and 14:00, mostly well behaved and competent - however two collided with us. Very difficult fishing during this time.
Fished whole beat from Cottage Pool down. Difficult access into Cottage, however rest of beat has cut paths leading to some of the pools. Floating lines, small flies / 0.5" tubes, no fish caught. Great to see new road access & parking.

River in good order and stayed very mobile, fishing all likely looking swims. Tried pellets, meat, paste etc but just couldn't catch a single barbel! Not sure if they have moved into the area yet as presume they would have been feeding as conditions looked spot on! Found a nice run under some trees and finally had 5 chub pretty quick up to 5lb. Fished beat 5, 4 and some of 2.

River low and fishing hard! Fish taking mayfly duns but not my imitations. Nymph caught the fish - biggest 12". First time I've finished this beat to the very end - it's well over a mile methinks. It's also v overgrown for the last few hundred yards (unfishable really).

River at summer levels, warm and clear. Boys rocks looked to be the swim of choice with a lovely deep hole on the run off, we both managed to squeeze in. Standard pellet and ground bait feeder was the preferred method and accounted for a good number of barbel throughout the day with the largest being just shy of 10lb with some lovely fat chub which pushed 5lb. Didn't have too much trouble with lost tackle which looking at previous reports had plagued anglers in this swim. Salmon leaping and splashing through the day and enjoyed watching a succession of salmon anglers on the opposite bank trying for them. A very enjoyable day in beautiful surroundings, thanks again WUF. Looking forward to booking the October session shortly.

Drove across the field towards the smoke from the infamous pump at 1300. The area adjacent and upstream was being strimmed and I was allowed to drive up the bank to the top of the beat to find a quieter spot. There are accessible swims and I fished meat with a feeder until 17.00. The only catch was a very big eel.
AT 17.00 I decided to chance the area around the extractor. The noise is bearable but being upwind of the fumes is rather unpleasant. Three good chub (around 4lb) were landed on pellet but not until after 19.30 when the pump was switched off. Two barbel of similar weight to the chub were lost in the shallows just in front of my net.(River very low and clear) This is an idyllic spot when it is silent and the number of salmon leaping and the abundant wildlife remind you why you fish the Wye.
