Another lovely warm spring day so I decided to give chanstone a go. Really enjoyed this beat with a mixture of fast runs, undercut banks and very deep holes all of which looked likely to hold fish. Got in the river at 11.30am and slowly worked my way back up to the bridge without having to get back out. A few odd risers here and there and managed one 10" trout on a small klink and one more trout and one grayling on a #16 PTN both about 12 inches. Judging by the amount of fish I clumsily spooked I should of maybe caught a lot more, some of them looked to be big old lumps for the size of this river. Will definitely have another go here once I've had a chance to tie up a few more flies to replace the dozen or so I lost in the trees!!

Hazy sun. Warm all day - up to 20C. River clear and water temp. 10C. Started at 11.00am and positioned myself for march brown hatch, which happened for a short period at around 12.30pm. Caught 5 nice trout on dry march brown imitation including 17" fish. For the rest of day used dry parachute Adams with green nymph suspended and picked up fish all day until 5pm, catching a further 20 trout. A high proportion of fish caught was in the range 6-12oz, a good sign for the future.

First time on this beat and I thought I was running the Grand National as I cleared more fences than the horses will on Saturday.I only spent four hours fishing and fished duo as no fish were rising.
Took two six inch wbt in the run after the first hurdle up from the bridge in the first half hour. After successfully and safely negotiating the next few fences I came on a run with a trout rising so covered it with the second cast and brought a ten inch beauty to hand. Took an eight inch trout a little further on and missed one take from a cracking fish which looked to be the biggest of the day.
Thanks to Allyson at the Wye and Usk.

The passport states that wading is necessary on this beat, I found it impossible to enter the water safely! Nil seen or caught.

Having been advised that a few Grannom had been seen on the river at the weekend, today's unabated sunshine and light winds should have been all that was needed to get more of the pupae hatching, and so it proved. The first Grannom appeared at about 9.45 and, by 10.15, there were enough hatching, off and on, until midday to get the fish really active. Not yet "plague" proportions but a steady moderate hatch - ideal! Classic Grannom feeding patterns with fish moving quite long distances laterally to take emerging pupae, so rarely found quite where they were following a rise! Had fish to 1.5lb on my Grannom pupa emerger patterns and then, in the late afternoon (probably midge feeders), further fish on a small HE emerger in shallow streamy water. If the weather continues quite warm and sunny, Grannom emergence time should get earlier from now on. It will be interesting to see how big the hatches are this year after last year's poor showing. A lovely day.

The longer evenings now allow for a decent session after work. Water 1ft 8" and very clear. Saw a fish in Bridge but couldn't get it to take properly. One was lost in Upper Glangwye from the Spreadeagle side.

Arriving at the lower section parking around 10 o'clock I was on the river for half past. A short walk from the saw mill I found the river. Access from this bank is easy and as far as I could see most of the way up. I started out using klink and dink, the gulley is in this section. As I moved up the beat I noticed some olives coming of so switched to dry fly. I didn't see one rise all morning. Just after lunch saw an Large dark olive hatch and rising fish appeared all down the river. I managed to take a 16 inch 2Lb brown trout with a jingler dry fly during the hatch. I tried a few different methods during the afternoon but to no avail. It's still early season but the fish are there during the hatches. The day was very sunny and bright too so a few things not in my favour. I really enjoyed my day none the less. A beautiful place to fish.
Please note - The wading in this section is very tricky, there are a lot of slippery boulders and bed rock river bottom. In my opinion a wading staff, felts and studs should be essential.
