The river was in fine winter condition so no excuse for having a blank but I did. Tried all the things that have worked in the past but not today. Lots of knocks but that was it. It was a very bright day with a slight frost the night before - perhaps that was the reason for the dry net. Thanks as always to w u f for giving us the chance to fish great beats like this and taking my booking at such notice.

7 Chub 1 WBT on meat and cheese paste. Note to the Pike angler who had fished there previously and had shoved his plastic bag in the bank and his empty bait bag in the stinging nettles. I went to all the effort to pick it up and put it in MY BAG and took it home and put it in the BIN for you. WHY couldn't you take it home and put it in your BIN??? It must have been more hassle to put your hand in the nettles than take it HOME.
WUF note - Please respect the countryside and the beat you are fishing and take ALL you litter home with you. Anyone caught intentionally littering on Wye and Usk Foundation water will be banned from fishing with the Foundation in the future. This is unacceptable.

Had a full day fishing for pike ,river conditons looked good up, 2 to 3ft & fairly clear. Fished about 8 different swims, all of them 3 times each d/baiting & lures, nearest I got to a pike was 1 dropped run at last knockings. Just nice to get out on the bank and watch the wildlife with out the cannoeist etc. Thanks again to Colin & all at WUF office.

Only 1 bite & 1 chub caught on pellet despite trying several fishey looking swims. River was up & chocolate coloured. On another note I was surprised when 2 other anglers arrived as I was the only one booked on the beat, they claimed to be members of a syndicate & not sure where the beat started, you can draw your own conclusions from that one.

Fishing:Winter Grayling
No. of Anglers:1
Fished from 12 noon for two and a half hours in bright sunshine. Advised locally that river was high, had a lot of leaves and associated debris flowing and was running very fast - this proved to be an accurate assessment of river condition. Sporadic hatch of Olives. Saw no fish - raised no fish with a dry - contacted no fish with nymph/bug.
Despite all of the above an enjoyable November fishing trip - will definitely go back in 2013.

Beat:Abernant
Fishing:Winter Grayling

Water levels up and coloured after more overnight rain, sunny start to the day and very light wind. 1 rod long trotted the other went with dry fly and nymph. 3 grayling enticed by the maggot, sadly nothing on the nymph or dry fly. Heavy rain at about 3pm curtailed the afternoon. Difficult to access for much of the beat in these conditions.

We made our way from Berkshire to the top parking spot and attempted the descent down a waterlogged jungle path in pouring rain to find the river full, cold and coloured. Reasonable choice of swims top end for us 2 to identify an alternate if required later. Settled for 2 with nearside slacker water to target and preceded with the standard tactics of feeders and pellet with a meat alternative for those swimming to gorge themselves on at our expense. TS stayed put and ended his 2012 WYE quests with 3 Chub, 4lb the biggest and a very welcome Barbel of 8lb 11oz, all fell to pellet. RH roved around towards the island pegs and ended his WYE missions with a couple of Chub ,only one of which aloud itself to be landed. Venue exellent, parking could be better in the lane just off of the road. One last point to add, having just scaled Mount Kilimanjaro I was prepared for the ascent up that hill in the rain, are you? Thanks WUF for your help, Stan the local Keeper very useful phone call, will return.
WUF note - Improvements are due to be made to the parking arrangements. A hard standing will be constructed in the field at the upper parking. The bottom parking is to become 4x4 access only right to the waters edge.

Day 3: Yet more rain over night! The banks were very slippery so just getting in a swim was tricky. A had a chub of about 3lb on pellet and a roach around 1lb.

The lane was so bad due to the weather and such, the only two parking spaces that are allowed were inaccessable. Forty quid down the drain, wont be going back here.

It was my first time on this beat and looking for pike action. I worked sardines or mackerel in spots all along the beat without any takes. The water was up & coloured so switched to a barbel rod in the afternoon and had 2 on meat roving to 8lb.
