Beat:Sheephouse (River Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

3 coarse rods fished Sheephouse for the first time, originaly was to have been 5 rods but two were unable to make the trip. Only fished the middle beat both upstream and downstream of the hut, was unable to progress any further than the cottage downstream or past the first meadow upstream due to overgrown bank vegitation. Total fish caught between three rods - 8 Chub to 4lb's 10oz, 2 Barbel biggest 7lb 12oz. Enjoyable day but slow and hard going, probably due to the low clear river.

Beat:R12 Duhonw

Fishing:All Species (in season)

6 x trout to 9 inches. Lots of little trout in the top of this beat in the gorge and at least one pounder seen, but in the clear, low water I spooked nearly every pool by scaring the little fish on the tail. A nice sighting though: while leaning on a rock in the gorge at the top end, reflecting on how to be less clumsy next time, a big dog otter came round the corner above and worked the pools down towards me, humping in the water and waving his rudder around as he searched under all the rock crevices with his fore paws. He was clearly aware of my presence as he came past, but didn't seem that bothered. The little trout looked pretty traumatised though after his passing through, dashing every which way in groups.

Beat:Cefn Rhosan Fawr (River Usk)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

Two small browns (to 1/2 pound) on tup's and grey duster. Couple of much larger fish put down through insufficient stealth. These fish have 360-degree vision. Very pretty stretch, hard to cover the whole beat in a day.

Beat:Skenfrith (River Monnow)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

3 Grayling of up to 2lbs, 1 Chub 7". All caught on a heavily weighted PTN.

River very low making sport difficult. Nonetheless a lovely stretch and in the end my patience was rewarded.

Beat:Abernant & Plas Gwyn (upper Wye)

Fishing:All Species (in season)

2 rods. Several reasonable grayling on small dry flies of various sorts. The lower beat is more interesting due to the fall of the water. No sign of rising trout but enough grayling to make it enjoyable. Upper beat very quiet but PTNs found a few very small trout and couple of good grayling on lage dries. Brighter day but a cold down-stream wind. Autumn!!

2 very interesting days for 2 ol’ blokes having a boys outing. Thanks for the great service on the ‘phone, as ever.

Biddy Williams (Dol-Llyn-Wydd B&B) should be recommended. A smashing character and good value accommodation.
