Water high (but falling) and the colour of weak tea (but clearing), conditions which sometimes give a red letter day on the Irfon. Old-fashioned fishing with traditional grayling flies: Red Tag, Treacle Parkin and Grayling Steel Blue, that is to say two flame tailed fancy flies and an olive imitation, first fished wet as a team, and then dry individually when the sun came out after lunch. Grayling Steel Blue on the top dropper scored best wet; Red Tag was the most acceptable dry.

33 x trout, best two fish (both hens) 17 inch and 18 inch. 18 x grayling, best fish (cock) 17 inches, but a number of others around the 15 and 16 inch mark. Why can't it always be like this, I wondered? I didn't even mind discovering that my waders were leaking.

Two rods.... 1st day unfishable. 2nd day river level down. We had 11 barbel from 4.8 to 9.15 and one chub all on pellet. lost 4.

4 Trout caught from about 6" to 9" all returned safely.
3 to klinghammer one to hares ear nymph. Lovely day out. Saw kingfisher, dippers and mink (watched me from about ten foot away) A couple of significant log jams starting up.

Good days fishing in great location, accurate directions and beat description. Will fish this beat again. Catch returns as follows.

2 x Brown trout, 2 x 10".
2 x Grayling, 1 x 11", 1 x 13".

All fish in excellent condition and returned to water.

Fished from 2-6pm Monday 7th September 2009. A sunny/cloudy afternoon with the occasional strong downstream breeze. (Made casting a challenge) Not much fly life about and rising fish hard to find. Some small fish rising odd times which I suspect were small grayling Found a few fish rising mid-afternoon about half way along the beat. Hooked and lost a couple on drys and landed and released one nice brown trout about 12-14 inches on an Adams after witnessing it chase/rise to a thistle seed.

My wife and I rounded the day off with a pint, a lovely meal and a nights accomodation at The Bell at Skenfrith. What more could I ask for. Excellent!

A pleasure just being there, but catching 3 barbel to 7lb (and losing 1) and 9 good chub to 4lb+ made it all the more enjoyable. I shall return....

4lb Grilse taken on an Black/silver Rapala. fish was slightly colored and was returned safely to the water.

River in flood, very swollen, fished from 10am-about 2pm, luncheon meat, no luck, but two pairs of peregrine falcons spotted overhead so not a wholly unsuccessful visit.

Several Barbel to a good size, river high and coloured. A good venue, would visit again. Fish caught on pellet.

Really tough day weather wise, it was blowing a gale downstream in the morning then very heavy showers all afternoon made roving tricky. Three barbel in all around 6-7 lb plus one chub 3lb and one lost to a hook pull, all fish from the lower end of the beat taken on pellet.
