16.30 - 1900hrs. A sultry early evening after a very hot, but slightly overcast day. The water was getting on the low side; plenty of fly life evident - mostly small pale olives at the lower end, with a darker variant predominant at the top of the beat. The only surface feeding fish were fry, however.
Undeterred, I worked my way up stream casting blind into the throat of a pool, or a gully cutting under a tree root. Too often I lacked the desirable delicacy but managed to provoke 4 solid rises from fish in the deep but turbulent areas of stream. A couple of these came to hand and were about 10". Size 16 dry Greenwell.
It's a lovely beat, but I suspect much of the middle section may be unproductive at most water levels. Also perhaps best fished in the morning, working upstream into the light, since it runs east to west. Very well maintained fences and gateways (but the stile at the bottom of the beat is collapsing).
Two separate cuckoos, and a huge warren of rabbits added to a most enjoyable visit.

No fish caught, but I missed a lot of takes on the surface, I must be a bit rusty.

Fished mid-morning to mid-afternoon but only tempted one wbt of 6 inches. In fact I didn't see another fish all day or any rises. The fish took a small black nymph fished under an elk hair caddis. Weather was overcast and quite chilly for late May. There was a good hatch (spinners I think) in the middle of the day, but nothing rising.
This is a nice little stream for three or four hours fishing, in beautiful countryside. Despite taking a stealthy approach all day, I was disappointed not to see more fish. I guess that's fishing.

Just a very short closing session on a really enjoyable 4 days fishing on WUF waters. We drove past Grywne Fawr the evening before and viewed a thundering chocolate soup from the day's rain. Surely no fishing the next day. Unbelievably arrived 15 hours later and the river was down to a fishable level and clear. Easy to wade, all fishy places offered a back cast, would allow no more than 4 hours to fish this one. Didn't really see any rising fish but tempted 6 up to a dry (Adams), one a clonker for such a small stream. Quiet and pretty, a lovely place to cast a fly.
A lovely way to end a 4 day trip with my brother-in-law - around 140 wbt between us all on dries, Kings Arms in Abergavenny a comfortable base and set in some of this island's most beautiful landscape.

I arrived just about 3pm - just after the rain. So sadly a wash off.

At last this stream has come to life, lovely day though still a cool breeze. River flowing well and crystal clear, not a huge hatch but enough to get the trout interested. Caught 1 in the morning on a gold bead hares ear, then after lunch 6 more, with several missed, on a small para adams. Trout still in the pools or the fast water at the head, not yet in the runs or shallower stretches. Great fun nevertheless.

I thought river in near perfect condition, lovely day, lots of insect activity (for the time of year) including some large up-wings which to me looked like mayflies with large sail like wings, long tails, and flopping about on the water in classic fashion. Only issue - NO FISH! Nothing caught and not a sign of anything seen despite both careful observation and wading in looking for disturbed fish shooting off.

No sign of fish activity at all and no real fly life evident, still a bit too early to fish this beat yet, water temperature must be too low.
