Quick trip up to my favourite stream at Cregina. Zero caught in the morning. I was getting them up but they wouldn’t stay on and I started to worry a bit.
Things picked up after lunch with 9 fish caught. The usual range of Edw trout at 6-10” and I suspect some of my smaller catch were Salmon Parr but I wasn’t very confident so I’ve marked down a couple caught. They had a deeper fork in tail than the trout. Got snarled in Welsh Show traffic on the way home - bad planning!

Our first time trying euro nymphing, so very happy with a few small trout.

The river was still very low and the colour was slightly less brown although far from being clear. Very pleasant temperature for fishing. Floating streamer weed still a nuisance. The barbel were seemingly not interested in feeding during the day and all fish bar one were caught in the last couple of hours .

The Lugg has not fished well this season (no, let me rephrase that, I have not done well on the Lugg this season). That said, I was expecting more from Lyepole; which invariably produces, even on those dog days of summer. Not much to report. My "other" was a specimen minnow; which picked the nymph off the bottom, as I was checking my phone to see how the golfer I had backed in The Open was getting on (placed at 200/1)
I agree with Oliver Birch, this beat needs a trim. You should take note of this observation, as it comes from a man who knows a thing or two about trimming; I have my hair cut twice a year, whether it needs cutting or not. You might also like to re-think the premium pricing for this beat as, with the Cottage occupied, as it invariably is, there is not a fat lot to go at downstream. I accept that it is the owner, and not Wye & Usk, that sets the ticket price but, the paucity of bookings this season suggests that I am not the only one who thinks this way
Stopped of at one of our club beats on the way home where, with the exception of the minnow, I duplicated my Lyepole catch

A gorgeous beat. Water was low, wind was strong, and the fish did not come out of hiding until the gloaming, when I managed two on an IOBO humpy. A gorgeous stretch of river.

Fished all day, only two small trout on nymphs, 4" and 6". Beautiful part of the river but the access is atrocious. A previous report highlighted 8' bracken, and they're not kidding. Impossible to see the river through it and if you don't know the beat you would not find the access points. Work is definitely overdue on this stretch.

I did not fish. The rain promised did not arrive. Water too low and warm and it would distress the fish.

This report is from Mike Newton( the old timer) not the other MN from Bristol. I thought the fish would be in the fast runs and pocket water but they were not really feeding and were holding up in the deeper pools. Using a long leader and nymphs I had to work really hard to make contact. The takes were very subtle and as many fish that were netted were briefly hooked and lost. The average size was 10" with the largest grayling and trout at 14". A challenging day but worth the effort.

Second day. One us fished at the orchard car park end for 17 chub to about 4 lbs and a couple of morning barbel, biggest 7 1/2 lbs. The other went down to opposite the big houses at the bottom of the big meadow. No bites came until evening time but a couple of average chub lifted the spirits. The barbel eventually fed at last knockings with two taken in the last half hour as the light faded. The biggest was just over 7 lbs. This session was not as prolific for barbel as my previous visit here but still an enjoyable couple of days.
