Wye Fishing Weekend (Part 2)
How pleasant to only have a 6 mile journey to the river instead of the usual 90; and another early start after, for some of us, far too much ale the night before. Buoyed up by yesterday's results, I fished French Nymph from the off. 2 Grayling in my first half dozen casts had me thinking I had cracked it but, before any smugness even had a chance to set in, the river came up 3 or 4 inches, with a nasty peaty colour, and pretty much killed it for the day. Hard work afterwards for the odd fish
The 2 "other" were Salmon Parr. I was hoping to add a different "other" to that tally - after hooking, and almost landing a huge Barbel, on totally inappropriate tackle, on a previous visit, I tackled up with a Reservoir rod after lunch, and went up river, determined to improve on my previous effort. Difficult to spot fish in the peaty water; but there was at least 1 Barbel there - said Barbel succeeding in ignoring all of my best efforts with bug and nymph.

The final outing of the long weekend took us to the River Cammarch beat. Having stayed at the Trout Inn in Beulah it provided a very handy couple of hours fishing before the long trek home. At this point I have to say that Dave and Heather looked after us superbly at the Trout Inn with some excellent food and ale, a warm welcome and comfortable rooms.
Starting at the main bridge in Beulah and working upstream, the Cammarch here is an interesting stream with a variety of runs and pools to give the dry fly angler a great sense of optimism. Access to the water is good here, and a small wbt was taken on a grey duster para on one of the slower runs.
Moving up to where the small stream joins, there is a beautiful run which saw 2 small fish snap at the fly but the reactions of the angler too slow to connect. A return to the run on the was back produced another take, but the reactions still way too slow to bother the fish.
If you are looking for a couple of hours of stream fishing without mountaineering or difficult wading then this section of the Cammarch is highly recommended, as is having a meal and a pint in the adjacent Trout Inn.

Caught on mix of french leader and dry fly, last two fish rising firmly to a Parachute Adams. Had to leave at 2pm to drive home at which point the fishing for the afternoon was looking promising despite gathering storm clouds. The river was at a good height with a slight tinge from rain the night before. Previous day on the Cammarch Hotel beat brought ten grayling to similar methods but in much lower water.

The river was very low, making it hard going, but we still managed to bag a few.
