The river was still at a height that was a bit high making dry fly presentation challenging … and I could not wade the river to access the upper part of the beat.

There was a fairly constant hatch throughout the day with olives, olive uprights and yellow Sally stoneflies keeping the fish looking up. Fish came all through the day and James landed all of his on one single fly … a grey dun parachute. Best trout and grayling about 17”.

At close of play I waded up the beat… there was a fish rising under the trees on the near bank in about a foot of water. I dismissed it as a tiddler and moved on. James came up half an hour later and it was still rising but more enthusiastically … head and tailing taking hatching duns. He saw its back and dorsal fin … a huge grayling, at least 3lbs! He had the sense to change his 3lb tippet for the strongest he had … 3.5lbs! As soon as he got the fly somewhere near the fish it walloped it …. And charged out in to the gutter at the centre of the river. Despite having changed to uprated tippet once in the faster heavier water in the gutter the inevitable happened …. Ah well next time.

River level good but rather worryingly brown and cloudy, rafts of foam in trees on opposite bank in places seemingly going nowhere.
Which given how little rainfall the region has had throughout the last 2 weeks is no doubt yet another consequence of something being seriously wrong!

Only one place to fish. Very bad directions as to which side or left ir right u can fish as signs all say private.
Really think someone needs to visit and up date instructions as 8 years is a long time. The white gste is no longer white.

Well, what a gorgeous day ..... I parked up by the road pull in at half eleven... Reading 19 degrees on my trucks dash then .... mooched down to start of the beat ....dries as always!!!! Various today, cdc and elk , Para dries and a tiny olive f fly ..... all did the biz ......
Nice to see it clear and a good few invertebrates under the stones, lots of fry and minnows too...... Some years around now it can "sludge up" .... but lovely and clean and clear at the mo ....
Seventeen trout to the dries, and two "peas in a pod" grayling ... trout about eight to ten inches today and I guess the grayling were both eight inch fish .... lovely rises to my dry fly though.... A no rush lazy approach ... one I dont think even knew he was hooked !!!!!
Will need to get up to what I call the bridge section of this beat ..... haven't done the too end for an age ... maybe a quick hour one evening me thinks !!!
Another cracking few hours on a very local lovely wild stream ....I'm catching up with a buddy tommoz , for a bit of a session on the Upper Wye , should be fun, and a lot easier fishing than these wild streams I might add .... not as fun though !!! I do love jungle warfare tactics,lol......makes it all worthwhile when you do get a splashy rise to your fly .... that said, rather spoilt on the Upper Ithon .... fairly open , lovely stuff !!!
Right, home time and I do believe I have one more bottle of Rev.James in my fridge..... puts the icing on the cake doesn't it, after a great few hours on the River...... Happy days !!!!

First time river fishing for some fifteen years. Very impressed with the service and details provided by "the fishing passport". I will be booking again but sadly not this beat. Water level was good and on arrival there was some rises to be seen. Walked to the bottom of the beat and there the jungle training kicked in. I spent more time climbing over branches and negotiating the bank than fishing. That said, it is wild water and I think it's impossible for the land owner to keep on top of this growth. Just a fact of life but I would have liked a few access points. Caught two around 5 inches and hooked/missed many more so pleased with that aspect. Mainly using nymph such as hares ear and pheasant tail. Overall an enjoyable day.
