Beautiful sunny start to the day, 14C as we entered the water at 1130. River was clear and relatively low for autumn, water was 7C. Plenty of fly life about for late october with olives most obvious, we even saw a handful of rises to naturals in the morning.
We fished the deep channel from the start of the beat with heavy nymphs but no fish apparent so we switched to klinkhammers and elk hair caddis with nymphs under about 3ft of tippet once we got to the first set of riffles and some shallower water. A small shoal of grayling lurking at a seam 20m down gave good sport going for the dry and the nymph, plenty of pulls and splashes with three to the net up to about 7". A few meters down from the boulders themselves in knee-deep water a very fine 11" trout took a caddis nymph and a smaller grayling went for a CDC olive.
We skipped over the next stretch of smooth water as we didn't fancy switching back to walking heavy bugs through the channel and moved up to the next set of riffles. The sun moved behind clouds at this point and, as the weather cooled, so did the fish. We had a couple of pulls and one trout of 8" to a small hare's ear, again in knee deep water, but that was the end of it. By 1330 it felt like a different day. We moved up to the top half and prospected through the pocket water with no joy. Finished at 1600.
A lovely day on a lovely beat - the first hour really did feel like summer fishing and we were hugely annoyed that we weren't able to arrive earlier. The only problem was that it made it hard to switch our thinking to winter tactics and we kept on covering beautiful streamy water with dries!

Another enjoyable day at Wyastone Leys, with dry overcast conditions. The river had dropped considerably since my last visit. Decided to split the day in half with the morning in the woods (the swim by the steps) and the afternoon at the large cattle drink in the second meadow field.
All the chub were caught on meat, with the largest being between 11/2 and 2lb.

Mild, grey day. River fining down, probably 30cm up on 'normal' level. Knocking through pretty quickly on most stretches.
Fish caught throughout day, pretty much from first cast 8am to last 5pm. Barbel showed up in afternoon, though fairly certain lost one fish mid-morning.
Chub were all over 2lb, with a couple of fish around 5lb mark.
Barbel were 8lb, 6.5lb and 9.5lb. Two fish in perfect condition. All Barbel seemed to be quite plump, probably bulking up for winter.
Variety of ledgered pellet used, but the Barbel (save for the one lost) all fell to luncheon meat. Most fish caught on edge of slack water. At least 4 ounces needed to hold bottom.

Stretch never fails to deliver, fish wise. Swims could be made easier to access with some simple maintenance. Catch of the day by far, an 11lb barbel. Great day as usual.
