Beat:Middle Ballingham & Fownhope No.8
Fishing:Coarse
No. of Anglers:2
A secluded and tranquil stretch of the river Wye, this beat offers a good range of swims. On the day of our visit there was some additional colour from recent rains and the river was at near normal level. The fishing proved difficult with just four barbel from this usually productive stretch, all falling to pellet presented in various ways. There were chub to be caught on meat on the straight lead and we could have had more if we had focused on this species and we finished with eight between the two rods. A lot of weed drifting downstream made presentation difficult throughout the day. All fish were caught from swims in the first field.

Had a superb day fishing, lots of barbel, smallest was 6.5lb and biggest was my brothers new pb of 9lb. Had a 5lb chub trotting the float, best fun I've ever had, lots of decent floatfishing to be had in Whitney court. This was our second visit, we came last week, had to come again! Beautiful stretch of the Wye, lots of fishable swims, recommend strongly to travel light, as the only way is to move on if your not getting any bites...
We met Terry the bailiff/gamekeeper, he had some invaluable advice and was very forthcoming and friendly and pointed out to the hotspots!
Can't wait to come again, might book it out for a few more days next time! Found that any baits worked, if they're where I the swim, they're gonna take your bait, we were using luncheon meat and pellet in paste..

First time here. We headed to the woods, CH picked a likely looking swim and sat on the rocks, he had 9 to 8.5lb, BT had no luck in the woods, I fished the 1st field, unfortunately the weed coming down spoilt the day until it disappeared at about 3pm, once gone managed 4 and a chub. Not sure where the weed came from as we had not had any the day before and it hadn't rained, WUF any ideas, will be back for another go.
(Wuf note: sometimes there is some cutting going on othertimes Swans/cattle/swimmers and canoes all possible causes)

Would definitely recommend taking a stout stick with you as the paths can be quite treacherous. As previous fishers have said, this beat is at the extreme end of the spectrum. Major challenges to get down steep sides to access fishable spots. Unfortunately I did not see any fish let alone catch any in the short time I was there. Lots of very coloured water after recent rain. I have fished it once and I think that's enough for me. I will try a more forgiving beat next time! Nonetheless another fishing experience. Btw, when you drive up behind the pub to start, suggest park near the seat on the edge of the woods. The white posts are very dull now and difficult to spot. A path leads you into the woods and down to the stream.

Top field fished due to heavy rain making woods and route to bottom of beat very slippery underfoot. Pellets and meat took fish to 8lb. Late afternoon best.

Arrived at 10:30 to fish till 18:00. Second visit to this stretch of the Wye and a real mystery - conditions were all good for a good days fishing but unfortunetly no fish caught. Bites were few and far between and when the odd one came there were no real "takes".
As I say, a mystery, the fish were there but just didn't seem interested. Anyway it won't stop us revisiting this beautiful part of the world and enjoying the magnificent Wye.
