Disappointing day - fished from 10.30 until 5.30 on the inlet on the NE side using every type of fly I had in my box - 1 fish taken, about 1 & 3/4lbs (just enough for dinner for 2) on 6 fish ticket. No other interest.
Weather light rain in the morning but brightening in the afternoon. Wind initially light from W but freshened a bit and still no warmth in it.
Lots of fish rolling about on the surface but they wouldn't take a fly. I think my fish had been put in today as its dorsal fin was pretty much non existent. It did make great eating though! I think the water is still too cold, or I need to improve dramatically!

20 x trout 9-14 inches, Monnow Gosling. A proper mayfly afternoon, dull and warm, with plenty of the big flies hatching. My only complaint is that the river was still pretty thickly coloured, so the action was more or less confined to shallow runs and pool tails. I really shouldn't moan; if the Monnow didn't have plenty of silt there wouldn't be mayfly.

Very frustrating 4 hours on Olchon today. Fished CDC mayfly emerger the whole beat, hooking thirty or so and hook slipping on 50% of takes. Those that stuck were of a good size for the Olchon, all between 9-12 inches. One of those days!

Fished from 11am-4pm. Mild and overcast with the river runnning fairly clear and at a good height. Lots of flies about including a few early mayflies. Not that many fish rising although I started to see more between about 2-3pm.
I had an excellent days fishing despite falling face first in a bed of nettles near the end of the session! 18 trout caught, the majority 6-9 inches with one big fish of about 14-15 inches near the start of the beat. Lost quite a few fish as well including another big one that snagged me in tree roots. I fished for most of the day with a tungsten bead PTN suspended under a size 14 Klinkhammer catching 11 on the nymph and 1 on the Klinkhamer. 6 more fish were caught on a Parachute Adams dry fly.

First day back fishing after over 10 years away!
Dry fly only and waited until 8.30pm before throwing a line out. What a great little stretch of water this is. Opposite the campsite and upstream about 300m I found a gap in the trees and waited patiently for movement! Plenty of mayfly about but stuck with a little brown homemade fly. This worked instantly with a string of 3 smaller fish of around a pound or so. Returned these back for another day. Continued at the same point and at the maximum of my cast there were some bigger fish feeding, the hunt was on! I caught another little one of about a pound and a half then just before it turned pitch black I struck a biggy! Line snapped after a 10 minute fight but luckily he was over the net. One of the biggest trout I've ever caught on the Usk of 4.5lbs. Great bit of fishing and I shall be returning.
Thank you.

Fish 4-14 inches, mainly on GH-HE, less fish rising than on last visit. Two large 1lb+ fish from same pool, one sighted and caught from tail, one from the neck. Top half of beat fished. Some mayfly around, not much interest yet but it won't be long.

Hoping to repeat last years's good day. Omens OK, warm 19C, river good height. But fly life scarce. Short rise in morning, but Dog's Body, C de C olive emerger and PTN all refused. No reaction to wet flies in riffles. Salmon showed in Chain Pool at lunchtime. At 5.30pm retired to The White Hart Inn in Talybont, and comforted by their excellent hospitality.

Day 4 on Whitney and river now perfect. Not too coloured and clearing . Level dropping after good rainfall last week, light cloud, gentle westerly, warmer and barometer rising. Started on beat 2 at 10.30 am and fished good fly water from the island down to pump house..not a fish showing. Even the trout ignored fair issue of yellow sallies and mayfly. At 11.50 a large coloured fish rolled in the stream beyond the pump house. This was only the 2nd fish seen in 4 sessions three passes of the fly and a fish was on ..and off. It had taken the fly in the slack a foot from the bank as the line was stripped back very gently. The fly was plucked + sampled quietly a cast later and 2 chucks after that a heavy double take in mid-stream led to a 12 min walk up and down with what felt like a very relaxed hippo, which it may have been as it was unseen until beached. Measured 97 cm long and 52 round c. 22 lbs. It was a fit, fat, fresh cockfish and it went back strong and calm.
Tackle 14'9" Oracle Exp. Abel 10/11, SA DT wet tip and a Glen Tanar tied on a Partridge # 6 gold double. Very pleasing and many thanks to Mr Terry Ward of Whitney Court for advice and help through out 4 days for a mixed party of 6 different rods
