Very limited stretch due to lack of any depth and the pacey water, but made the best of it with 5 chub, 1 trout and a little salmon parr. The first 2 chub came from the downstream back eddy on the left bank to maggot feeder tactics. The next three fell to float fished maggots from the right bank near the bridge. Biggest fish might have just shaded 4lb.

Lovely venue. I fished the length of the beat and didn't see a fish, or even signs of any. Even the salmon anglers gave up after a very short time. River was at normal level and fairly clear. Weather was about 11 degrees. Fished a feeder most of the day and tried a lure for pike. Lost the lure and a feeder to snags. One of them days. Beautiful place though, very peaceful.

What the beat description/access doesn't mention is that the footpath through Capler Woods is quite a steep gradient and narrow and which we found out when wet is very treacherous when descending (and that was without any kit!) A kindly farmer let us access through his field which was a lot safer. The beat itself fished well despite the rain (we fished from 12.30pm to 5.30pm), we sat in the first field and had 3 barbel (8lb, 7lb 3oz & 5lb) and 4 chub (5lb 1oz, 4lb 14oz, 4lb 10oz and 2lb) all on maggot and maggot feeder.

This was my first time on this beat and it was a real pleasure. My brother and I had the whole section to ourselves. In the morning we fished upstream of the bridge and around midday there was a great hatch of dark olives. It lasted 25 minutes but trout showed mostly in medium to shallow water areas. We caught two on dries. In the afternoon nothing much was showing so I fished with a beaded pheasant tail nymph and indicator and had six more whilst my brother had two fishing wets downstream. Most fish were around the one pound mark with a 15 inch one that topped the day. Great day, cannot wait to return.

Drove up from Plymouth and stayed in Hereford o/night.
Fished here several times, prior. Magical. Had a new plan....my dream plan.
Armed with my new chesties and clip-on back bag prepped and loaded I set out to fish, firstly, from the top end of the beat, via the orchard, to park by the designated tree, so I could get out and sort me kit, pop over the stile and walk out into the river there for a heavenly hour or two, early in the morning, fishing for the Chub, Dace & Whiskers, then drive on down to the bottom beat lay-by, to fish from the field, from the prime Barbel and Chub swims, for the pm, until dark. What could possibly go wrong?
Was actually there, at the gates, for 6:30 (daybreak) - that's how prepared & excited I was. Got to the entry to the orchard and found, for the first time, the gates wide open, which was nice, if somewhat perplexing?
Turned into the orchard and couldn't believe me eyes, man!
Transpires they'd only (as is their right; it's their land after all) chosen now to prune ALL the trees in the orchard and pile ALL the cuttings 10ft high, 15ft across, EVERY 10yds, adjacent to the end of EVERY line of trees! So there was NO way through!!!
Tried; scratched both sides of the car in the first 30 yards and, in the half light, it looked as it got ‘worse’ as you looked down across the orchard …………… "Bu----!" Had to do a 10 point turn then to scratch my way back out again!
So THAT plan went out the window and I settled for doing the bottom of the beat for the whole day.
Yet ANOTHER one for my almanac! Why me? On the bright side, ’least they hadn’t drained it. The river. (And, yes; it HAS happened to me, on a lake in the F o D during a holiday break planned around fishing the said lake! Drained it, the week prior!). Never boring...
