Made use of the 'buy 2 get one free' freebie before end of season. For third year on the trot fishing in autumn I was blessed/hindered with clear blue skies and bright sunshine. River at a good height. Nil caught. Beat owner, Don, visited to chew the fat and offer advice. Would fish here again.

Difficult day with bright sun on a low clear river. Lacking the agility of a goat and the skills of a mountaineer my choice of swim was limited to one that I could access. A good barbel at 8lbs 10oz came early but once the sun came out the fish disappeared. I stuck to my pellet attack thinking they would come to the feed but my 2nd and final fish did not come until late afternoon. A good fish at 6lbs 8oz. Lot of floating weed about which made life difficult at times. Found the walk back up the steep slope quite exhausting on my mid 70's frame. I was due to fish the stretch again the following day but but with heavy rain in the morning I abandoned the idea as it could be quite dangerous for a lone angler.

River low. Bright sunshine. I focused on pools in the upper section above the parking area with no success. Met the owner who kindly gave me some useful advice on good taking spots, with a request to look out for poachers. Two seen on the opposite bank spinning through a pool. They slunk into the bushes when I called out.
Many thanks to the Wye & usk Foundation for a great service. Lets hope the Salmon get enough water to make it to the redds.

A tough day on Courtfield with only one of us catching. The first couple of hours of the day were spent in the Meadow for no result. A move to the woods produced a barbel of 7lb 6oz at lunchtime and another of 9lb 10oz just on dusk.

In addition to SE from Waterlooville's report.
He left just before dusk and I fished on until the last minute. Just as I reached for my rod to reel in and pack up the tip pulled round resulting in a 3lbs 9ozs chub. My only bite of the day.

10am to 1.30pm, trotting maggots. From swim below entry 1, oos trout, a good 2lber, 1 chub of around 2lb and then 6 barbel in about 20mins, must have attracted a shoal of barbel in 2 to 3lb size. I fished well overdepth and held back heavily, the barbel would only take to that method. I have noticed this on other occasions also. Moved to Quay, took another oos smaller trout then plagued by minnows. Bottom pool 1 grayling of 10inches or so then it rained and bites ceased.

11" on the gauge, clear water, overcast in the morning, brighter in the afternoon. Couple of grilse showing in the Stepping Stones early on but no offers.
First time on the beat. Along with studded soled waders and a wading stick (absolute essentials on this beat) the ability to Spey cast is pretty necessary too (not something I'm great at!). The walk up to the top of the beat along the bank is pretty hard going too, all in all a pretty challenging beat.
Looking forward to trying some other beats through the WUF.
