First ever visit to the River Wye and really enjoyed it, despite heavy rain for all of the day. The conditions made the fishing tricky with plenty of debris being washed through and picking up the lines but caught two cracking chub of 4lbs and 4 1/2lbs and will definitely be back for another go.

Rained all day, v.wet, v.muddy. A consequence of fishing through a prolonged downpour is a reluctance to try different swims or methods; perhaps that was my mistake. Sat it outfor a while. Anything but today! Did take a roaming rod and a bag of bait to squelch and slither my way to the island pegs, which looked a tad more inviting but in truth produced no more action than original choice. Just a smattering of chub at widely-spaced intervals, with not a sniff of a barbel. Disappointing start to a two-day trip.

All 3 fish came from 2 swims about half way along beat, largest 10lb, and 2 at about 6lb taken on Robin Red pellet. Tried other swims with no luck. Heavy rain all afternoon so we had had enough by 4pm, will return when drier conditions forecast.

5 x grayling 15-18 inches on various dries. Rained pretty well all day but the river level never moved. Quite early on DB was prospecting with a JG Emerger and took a superb cock grayling of 18 inches. Not long after, I found another taking olive duns trapped in a seam and got it to take a Grayling Steel Blue. That proved to be an almost identical 18 inch male fish, with shoulders like a bull. We both agreed that it didn't much matter what happened after that. In fact the fishing proved relatively difficult for the rest of the day; we got three more grayling of 15 inches but they seemed to be individuals rather than part of a shoal. Plus some out of season trout to 13 inches.

Very slow, probably due to weather. Caught 1 2lb chub before the rain came.
