Blank. Seven Sisters seemed quiet today. The one fish seen to move, in Martin's Pool, turned out to be a 32 inch well-mended kelt which dutifully took a Rapala put across its nose.
Trout anglers might be interested to know the grannom is up. While chatting with a rod from Stafford, we saw a fair old hatch of the little sedges taking place.

Cool, breezy and over cast. The beat is looking a bit rough around the edges due to the winter floods. Lots of trees down and a bit of rubbish around. Especially below the bridge. Although the wild garlic was very pretty. Taking it in turns my wife and I managed to rise 6 to the dry fly. Fishing Duo. We went to a smaller fly and took off the Nymph and got 2 good size Browns - 8" & 10" both released. A nice afternoons fishing. Would have liked to have known about the sewage farm as it was a bit smelly but the beat is still an attractive little lowland brook I would fish again.

Not a wiff of a fish.... despite a big Grannom hatch going on for most of the day only saw one small trout show. The river looked in good shape, and scenary beautiful, but there was just a strange lack of life in the water. Could be the cold wind gusting up the valley, bringing the temperatures down after a balmy Saturday, but it was not to be.
Fished fly all day for much needed casting practice

Fishing:Trout (River)

A warm start to the day gave way to the usual lunchtime downstream (Northerly) wind but the steady rain forecast did not materialise. There were fish smutting when we arrived, mainly small fish, and later hatches of olives. However, fish did not feed steadily except for one ten-minute spell when activity noticeably increased. This was at about 2.30 pm after I had started to think there would be no meaningful response from the trout today, but thereafter duns mainly sailed past untaken.
I caught on a dark - too dark - olive parachute, fish of approx 6 and 14 oz, but was also refused with this pattern in the busier period, and one of around 11 oz on conventional Greenwell's. No good on nymphs and shrimps, as experience has taught, but their time will come.
It was good to see oystercatchers and sandpipers on this long-awaited first trip of 2013 to the Usk, less good to watch goosander jetting past overhead. At this rate my intended camping break in the valley in early May is going to feel more like an Easter trip!
