Fishing:Salmon

11lbs slightly coloured fish from the very top of the Rock pool with the river running at 2ft 7" and 4ft vis. Saw another in the Bridge pool. Wading line on the bridge pool has shallowed and I got though it with 6" of freeboard. Turning back to get out at the 2nd access after fishing past the stones was a bit of a struggle against the force of water.

One carp hooked (and lost!) all day, lovely setting but stocking level looks low. Good conditions but only a handful of carp seen all day.
Suggest the WUF consider boosting stock levels which would justify the day ticket price and ensure repeat bookings.

Beat:Edw Aberedw
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:1
I'd booked Aberedw in the hope that Tuesday's rain would have washed through, it hadn't. My first two hours consisted of a pleasant upstream walk bird watching, interrupted here and there with a bit of casting practice. At about 2pm I was at the start of the beat contemplating the drive home when several fish started feeding. I've a lot to learn about fly life but the size 16 Iron Blue Dun looked a good match. Bingo! Happy Hour! One fine 11" fish to the net and several others pricked. Went home a happy man.
I'd stayed in the area for three nights. Peter Evans runs a truly remarkable B&B at the Old Storehouse on the banks of the Brecon Canal. www.theoldstorehouse.co.uk

Took a risk after the rain and fished hard all day in pretty dirty water. No salmon seen or touched. Managed to get amongst some quality brownies as a back up with fish to 2.5lb during a lengthy hatch of olives and other flies.

Fished for 2 hours in the evening on the Upper Monkswood beat of the Usk. Caught nothing but saw at least 3 salmon go over the weir. Torn now between fishing Lough Sheelin with M next week or staying and taking advantage of the good water!

Area:Usk
Beat:Cefn Rhosan Fawr
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Transferred to the upper Usk as a result of wash off on the Arrow. Fairly consistent hatch including a large number of olives for most of day but no fish rising. Water fairly clear. No fish and no takes. Attributed to cold flush of water, cold wind and (most likely) inability of anglers who went through their fly box in vain. Despite lack of fish a beautiful place and enjoyable day.

Area:Usk
Beat:Fenni Fach
Fishing:Trout (River)
No. of Anglers:2
Real mixed bag of weather, sun, cloud, rain and hail. River dropping after Tuesday's deluge but level made wading challenging and unable to reach the middle of the river to cast under the trees, a prime spot on this beat.
Mixed hatch, with the odd flurry of LDO's in the afternoon but nothing really rising. Nymphed most of the day. 6 thumping wbt caught, 5 over 12 inches, best around 15". One caught on a dry late afternoon, all returned. Given the forecast earlier in the week much better than expected.
If you plan to fish this beat the track to car park 2 is a challenge, best negotiated in a 4 x 4 or with similar clearance.
