Made a last minutes decision to fish as thought there might be small window before the rain coloured the river and brought it up. I was rewarded with a lovely mornings fishing in pleasant weather and a 10lb salmon from the Corner Tree pool. Was going to start at the top of the Vanstone but something told me I should cover the area around and downstream of the old broken croy in the Corner Tree. Fish was taken on a size 5 Monkey double and a heavy sinking (T10) tip on a slow sinking shooting head. No other fish seen or touched. Fished down through the Vanstone thoroughly by which time it was 14.00ish and the weather was really deteriorating. Time to head home.

No fish but a nice beat. Mainly spinning water, although there are a few nice areas for the fly.

Couple of hours fishing from 1pm. Had one take on a gold head nymph. Nothing other than that. Cold, hale, rain and snow but great fun none the less. More of an early season dust off than a serious days fishing. Clear water early on but getting murky toward 3pm due to heave rain. Great beat!

Two novice salmon rods (one spinning, one fly) fished both banks - the right bank in the morning in the rain and the left in the afternoon. No salmon caught or seen but a two pound trout taken spinning from the shingle at 'The Windmill' made a pleasant surprise (returned).
Like the beat, good access.

Stood under the open hatchback reluctantly sliding into waders that were still wet from the day before thinking I must be mad to fish in this wind and pouring rain? Then a passing loan jogger told me she had already covered 19 miles in the same weather! Who's mad?
Unable to control conventional techniques I resorted to the Czech style. Couldn't get the mental image of a tea pot out of my head for some reason? This is very cold work in these water temperatures. Left shortly after netting 12 inch o.o.s Grayling, returned.
Although not the most productive of trips, I couldn't wait any longer since not being able to come up since October, weather/river conditions and that, but enjoyed and learnt again.
Many thanks to all at WUF and Bronwye guest house.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the tributaries were a better bet early season? Wether this applies when it was minus silly degrees the night before, I don't know. At 09.00 this morning it was glorious though. The landscape this beat travels through is exceptional and the thought of having all day to spend on this two odd miles of river, whetted my angling appetite.
Not a bloody sausage! Now I don't profess to being the best fly fisherman but it would have been confirmation of my inabilities if I had even seen a fish! It was the strangest thing, some of the water would have been seen as a "banker" but nothing. I'm coming back in the summer when the water temp has risen, this beat has lots more to offer I'm sure of that.
