Great day but no fish.

Cracking Day weather wise but fishing difficult, hooked 2 fish on tungsten grhe in open water in first 6 casts & saw nothing for rest of day. Appeared to be decent hatch but saw only 5 rises all day. Easy fishing looked great. "must practise more". Surprised to see cattle standing in river no fencing.

Despite the warm, sunny weather there was little fly life apart from the occasional olive. So only 3 out of season grayling (10" to 12") on Kite's Imperial and snipe and orange spider. All fish returned in the water untouched.

None caught but one large and powerful trout lost after three 20 metre runs. Hooked at 1210pm on a dry Parachute Adams at the start of a sparse and short-lived olive hatch.
Air temperature 17C, water temp 8/9C. Sunny, cloudless sky, light east breeze. River low and clear. Decision to use light leader with nymph suspended from dry fly cost me the big trout as nymph probably snagged a rock (both flies were broken off)- you live and learn!! Disappointingly, in view of warm air conditions, very little activity from flies and fish for most of day.

Beautiful spring day. Very bright and warm. The river was right down to its bones and is in serious need of some rain if fishing is to pick up. LDOs hatching off from 11 reaching a peak around 12.30. Then some March Browns hatching (or are they brook duns?). The fish rose sporadically and were hard to tempt. I landed one beauty of 2.5lbs and another 1lb trout - both taken on a CDC Olive emerger. I also lost three other very good fish. Two went off with tremendous power and broke me off a rock and tree branch - the problem is you need light tippet to hook them, but this gives them the edge for the first part of the fight. The third was hooked in a fast gutter and just threw the hook. There were a few fish rising in the evening to spents, but they were in slack water and spooked on the first cast. If Tony Blair was a fly fisherman he would have shaken his head and said "presentation, presentation, presentation!" and he would have been right.

Had a super day on a very bright day, but caught nothing and did not see fish rising.

2 x 8" on m brown nymph. Beautiful day, but no hatch - disappointing.

One of the prettiest bits of river I've seen (although I hadn't expected to see someone swimming by the campsite). Did expect to see more fish with none showing until dusk despite good hatches for most of the afternoon. No fish caught.

Two nice browns of about a pound both on an olive nymph, both returned. One or two rising fish in the afternoon in the smoother, deeper water but no response to a dry fly.
A beautiful spring day - very enjoyable.

One chub caught on a dry fly on what seemed like a perfect trouting spring day. I saw what I thought was a good trout early on as I arrived at the beat but it might have been a chub. There was quite a hatch starting around 11.00am and fish were rising but were they all chub?! Despite the day getting warmer and the water was low and gin clear I did not see or spook a trout all day. After 1.00pm the hatch slowed down. This is a marvellous stretch of river but one has to wonder about the trout population. Beware of wearing felt soles on the slate bottom which is currently covered in fine layer of mud - it is worse than ice.
