No rain and no salmons, so trout fishing in the afternoon. Lots of small trout and grayling on wets and drys, great fun.

Oh dear, never mind - another day chasing the elusive silver tourist, only to find that he's gone on holiday!! 2 decent fish were hooked and lost on a #14 double Connemara Black and a #14 treble Cascade. The promised overnight rain didn't happen, and that's all that's needed to freshen and stir things up. We can all come up with reasons and excuses, but at the end of the day, the salmon remains the King!!!!

Cooler, overcast day with intermmitent drizzle but luckily little wind. Fish were rising sporadically all day but with no consistency. Fly hatching all the time and a few mayflies were still about.
Fished from bottom of Lady Alexander's Catch to the top of the pool in the morning then Abernant Stream in the afternoon.
After a quiet first half hour settled on something #16 , white with a green body - then the fun started.
Had 11 grayling and 2 trout in the morning - all on the same fly bar 1 grayling on a nymph when I decided to plumb the deeper fast water at the head of the pool.
Switched to a #16 deer's hair emerger in the afternoon and caught consistently along the length of Abernant Stream. Stopped counting when I got over 20 grayling.
Most of the fish in LAC were 6" to 8" with one at 10" and another at 12". The fish from AS were consistently larger - but none over 12".
Both trout were around 10".
Fishing barbless I must have hooked and lost another 10 fish and in LAC must have missed as mant fast takes as I hit.
All in all a wonderful day's fishing.

Footnote:

This time last week I was fishing in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park for wild rainbows and brook trout. Wonderful streams like the Little Pigeon River and the West Prong. Should have taken my tenkara rod as would have been perfect on these tumbling rivers and streams.
The Smoky Mountain Angler in Gatlinburg in an excellent, helpful store. Hired me a 3wgt sage rod and reel at $15 a day and a 3 day permit was another $30. Recommended method was "dry and dropper" with "anything with yellow" for the fly and a small ptn or hare's ear.
Plenty of small rainbows caught - but beware snakes in the river and on the banks (3 seen) and the small matter of black bear - we saw 8 but luckily none when I was fishing.

Third visit to this beat and enjoy the fact its a fairly short beat with very easy access to the river. Wadding also not too difficult as long as you have a wadding stick. The cows in the field didn't mind me intruding on them as I made my way down. River was low but I knew would hold fish. Czech nymphing with a Rag Tag and GRHE on jig hooks did the trick but just two brought to the net with the best probably to half pound. Fish came from Lady Alexanders Catch with the faster water keeping the Grayling interested. River needs some water and will be back.

Only two Grayling came to the net, both Red Tag and GRHE on jig hooks size 12 took the fish with one that got away. All the action came from Lady Alexander's Catch in the faster water and couldn't hit most takes. Fished until 5pm and once the wind picked up called it a day. River needs a bit more water and will return very soon.

We were prepared for a hot and 'sticky' day. And it was. By the end of the afternoon we were exhausted - but this was more than compensated for by the number of fish we caught. We fished up and downstream, through the deeper pools and the shallower faster runs, and managed to take fish throughout the beat. All fish were taken with small nymph patterns - there were very few fish rising and nothing could be tempted with dry flies. Very small PTNs proved most successful, but we also secured fish using Greenwells Spiders, Snipe and Purple, and tiny wet-pattern winged March Browns. The fish looked in great, clean condition and were all returned - including numerous good-sized Grayling. An unusually productive day - we don't get many of these !!

A very hot day with beautiful conditions. I began fishing with a nymph rig and caught a fair few fish throughout the day. Towards evening there were many fish rising so I switched to a dry fly and in the space of 10 minuites i caught 2 grayling and 1 trout on a CDC emerger. I reckon if i had been there longer i could have caught another 10 fish but my dad made me leave as he was tired from last night's sea-trout fishing. I will return with many more dry flies.

Just before sundown we stood on the brigd at Builth watching the Wye for 20 minutes and we must have seen a couple of hundred rises. There was no time when there wasn't at least one fish rising. A perfect weekend.

Good water conditions but the sun was a bit too mucb for me therefore I left early pm. All fish caught from faster water, some on dry flies, some on nymph. Thank you.
