Fished on July 6 and 7, and caught 3 trout and 3 grayling on each visit. Came across a large dead lamprey in the shallows. Would highly recommend the fish and chip shop in Builth Wells too.

Conditions interchanged quickly between torrential rain to bright and clear. This made fishing more difficult especially at midday. Nevertheless fish were caught, the highlights being a 14" trout and 12" grayling caught on spider patterns through the pools lying off faster water.

Busy start to the day on my first visit this season to Abernant. Took about 10 fish on a F-Fly in the first hour and a half. Mostly small trout and grayling but a couple half pound fish, but nice to turn up on a river during a good hatch.
However the action stopped dead on the surface so fished New Zealand style and took fish to a pound from the faster water. After 2pm it was very hard to get a bite by any method.
Most the fish here are small but a great fish about 3lb swam straight past me, so they are there!

This is an interesting beat with a wide smooth pool tail at the top followed by a a neck of lovely fast water at the head of Lady Alexanders catch then a long slow pool followed by a very rocky section with lots of pocket water. Had 1 small trout in the tail of Lady Alexanders pool then connected with a very decent sized fish ~3 lbs+ , under the trees using an Invicta which steamed off down the Stone Catch, jumped a couple of times and said good bye - behaved more like a sea trout than a brown trout. Then nothing until the evening when an Invicta fished down and across was hit by a really nice grayling of 1 1/2 lbs which was followed by another 6 all on a small brown czech nymph and of similar size before fading light stopped play. This was a shoal of hard fighting, quite substantial fish which were a lot bigger than the 8 oz ones Ive usually caught before. Nice to find such good quality fish on the Wye. Several salmon showed over the course of the day. Not much in the way of a hatch but it was the hottest day of the year so far. NB to fish the Stone Catch you need a wading staff as well as studs on your boots!

Another pleasant day on a favourite part of the river. Water low and fishing slow, there really wasn't much about. Could have done without the folk on the opposite bank throwing stones and branches into the river though!!

Low water with only 7" on the Llanstephan guage and a lovely day's weather: mainly cloudy and little wind for a change. Unfortunately though, the favourable conditions made no difference whatsoever to insect life, with few bugs around, as on all rivers at the moment - just a few Yellow Mays and small olives, and hardly any sedges or midge. Not surprising then that there weren't too many rising fish! That's not to say though that they weren't looking up, because they clearly were. I started in the morning with duo and had a grayling on the HE emerger and a trout on the PT nymph but that was it, so changed to nymphs and dropped a nice grayling on the GRHE on the point, but tempted nothing else. Saw a couple of sips in the early afternoon and decided to switch to the HE emerger again and proceeded to catch sixteen more grayling and four trout, just searching the usual honey holes, and with most fish being non-risers. What they were taking the emerger for, I haven't a clue! Most trout were 8-10" and the best 14". Most grayling were 11-13", with others of 8-10" and the best a 15" 1.25 pounder. All in fine fettle and all returned. Planned to stay for a hoped for evening rise but was knackered decided to give up at 6 p.m.! All in all, a rather strange day but a pleasantly rewarding one. Grayling can be so obliging can't they!

Enjoyable days fishing, though the wind made casting a challenge. Grayling were all around the 10-12 inch mark and came from the faster, shallower section of Lady Alexander's pool on a heavy nymph fished down and across. Caught a couple on a klinkhammer also. Trout 6 inches and came to same method before the stone catch area. Also saw a couple of lampreys in the shallow run before Stone catch.

Fished for a few hours in the afternoon mostly on the fly but finished off with a quick run down the pool with a FC. Weather warm with occasional showers. No salmon showed and even the trout seemed subdued. River was low and could do with a good foot or more to stir things up. One small brownie on the fly.

Great Day! GRHE responsible for most takes, not many fish rising but enough taking flies fished on a beaded fly.
