The river was very low and clear, managed to catch 1 barbel and 2 chub on 8mm pellets from below the boat house as the light was fading.
My first visit to this stretch of the Wye and I will fish it again, hopefully when the conditions are more favourable.

Another pleasant day on the Wye with fish caught on and off throughout the afternoon. The walk is not for the faint hearted though!

The river had risen about a foot or so after the recent rains. Good colour to the water.
Barbel were between 7 and 9 pounds. Chub from 1 to 4 pounds.
I fished just down from the boat house at the weir garden.
Barbel caught on feeder fished pellet
Chub caught on feeder fished meat and float fished bread flake. It's a good walk from the car park and the banks in areas are a bit wild. I only fished from 3pm to 8pm due to working. Great beat in a beautiful location.
Just booked next visit!

Back for a second day. My partner in crime went back into the going swim from the day before and soon had 2 barbel in the net and some chub before the swim died.
I went into the swim where I had lost two fish the day before and planned to build it with bait throughout the day. I used a baitdropper so that I could ensure accurate placement. A mix of hemp, corn and elips pellets of various sizes. Fished a feeder with the usual three foot link.
Very quiet in the morning. Tried a swim lower down where a tree had fallen across the water in the hope that a few fish were enjoying the shade from the hot sun but without joy.
Went back into the main swim about 1pm and did not plan to move. I started baiting steadily and had my first bite after an hour following a brief but heavy downpour. It was the same as the day before with the line cutting on something as the fish powered off!
I continued with the baiting and it was soon apparent that the swim was showing signs of life with plenty of knocks on the rod tip. Ended up with 4 barbel to 6lb 15 oz with one more lost due to line cutting.
My partner moved into the swim above me and put some bait out and the fish decided to move upstream, with signs of life in my swim ending. He had a 7lb 8oz barbel and then they did the off. As is often the case in my experience of the Wye, last knockings are not usually the best time. As the light fades so do the bites.
Was surprised to find another angler setting up in the gloam as a local came down on his bike to enjoy the dark hours.

When I have seen people reporting blanking on the Wye I have often wondered if they tried hard enough! I tried very hard in a variety of swims and still drew my first ever blank on the Wye. Lost a couple of barbel late afternoon, one a hook pull and the other with line sliced on a rock! My partner found the one swim that was more consistent and hard one barbel at 7lb 12oz and 6 chub.
We were coming back the next day for more of the same; I decided to try and build up some bait in the swim I lost the fish and hope that they came on the feed in the evening as they had on this day. I have caught plenty of barbel on the Wye in hot sun and low water before but not on this day.

Arrived at 4.30pm. A nice walk down the fields just before a big downpour whilst mixing the ground bait. I decided to try a lone piece of luncheon meat and had 2 bites straight away resulting in one barbel of 5 1/2lb. By this time my father in law had just cast in. We were getting lots of knocks on meat but even when hooking fish it was hard to get them in as there a lots of snags for them to throw the hook. David also missed a few and lost a lovely barbel at the net but was loving the action. I then had 2 barbel of 6lb+, 1 on krill pellet and one on garlic pellet. Time was flying when at about 8pm David got his barbel weighing 8lb 5oz. It was a cracking fish and made his night. I caught a lovely chub at 9pm before moving further up stream where on my 3rd last cast I caught a 9lb 3oz barbel. Although it was a shortish session we had plenty of action and should have caught more but its a snaggy stretch and this resulted in a few lost feeders. Plenty of salmon rising but it's very low with little flow in places.
Thanks to WUF for my late booking it's a great beat. Fished near the Weir Garden, only worrying thing was at 9.45pm as we left a chap on a bike with fishing gear was coming along the field towards where we had been. Back soon.
We were staying in Hoarwithy and also checked out Tressecks and Red Rail stretch and saw a chap from the campsite catching barbel but had no landing net. He said he had been told it was free fishing and had caught about 6 barbel.
