Warm, dull day with fairly persistent rain through most of it. River running high at 0.57 on the Ross gauge, rather too high for this beat we thought and fairly coloured. However, from the Dog Hole in the morning, two coloured hen salmon of 32 inches and 38 inches on an Abacus tube fished off a fast sink tip. Then after lunch, two more hen salmon, both on the same fly and also from Dog Hole, both at 32 inches. All strong deep-bodied fish which gave me plenty of trouble in a big current, particularly the 38 inch fish one which got well into the backing at one point. Finally, to round things off, a large coloured cock fish grabbed the fly at the top of the V and proceeded to play merry hell with me before jumping himself off in a series of cartwheels on the far side of the river. Altogether a memorable day - you could almost forget the blank ones!
